@judithyates1 @WEDINOSProject Something surprising about W059985 from 4th Jan is the presence of the heroin byproduct 6-MAM. This is only made when opium is converted to heroin. So the sample has been mixed with actual "heroin" or this is an artefact of WEDINOS reporting.

It's likely that subjective factors account for the difference.

@SteveTransform @matthabusby @FMeasham @EveningStandard All this is very accessible. A piece of litmus paper put inside a baggy will show if the acidity is extreme and a sheet of clean foil and an electric oven on the lowest setting will do the drying work.

@SteveTransform @matthabusby @FMeasham @EveningStandard Acidity testing of mephedrone reveals that it is also often contaminated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), making it very acidic. HCl worsens the water retention and makes methylamine harder to evaporate by bonding to it, but it is also driven off by strong heating.
