I see Spike Lee and his wife being honored as ambassadors to Benin, Ciara receiving African citizenship, and Lauryn Hill making her pilgrimage to the Motherland. On the surface, it all feels celebratory, but beneath it, something feels performative. Like curated optics meant to signal unity, without the substance of true solidarity. If there is to be a Pan-African connection, that bond must be on both sides. But, connection without reciprocity is exploitation in disguise. So I ask: when the next state-sanctioned execution of a Black man or woman occurs in America, will the African Union raise its voice? Will it impose sanctions against the United States? Symbolism without action is not solidarity. We don’t need honorary titles, we need international allyship in dismantling the global machinery of anti-Blackness.
