@alphafox I had a few neighbors that would blast music in the apartment complex. Little did they know, I had a triple woofer 7 channel surround setup with double amps. Put them against the wall, turned the volume to about 70% of max, suddenly their music was at a reasonable volume.

@plu_plus This is 100% true. Most of the highly successful games I can think of do a few things exceedingly well. Features that get added tend to enhance those things, or use them in novel ways, rather than trying to make a game that does everything.

@aerial_knight Part of the issue is that novel experiences get buried under copycat slop. It can be really difficult to sift through games when there are 10-20k dropping on Steam each year. You're correct though, playing games that aren't great can still make for enjoyable experiences.

You would enjoy video games more if you played something different. When you were a kid everything was new but you stopped trying new things because you thought you might not like it, or you heard it wasnt a 10/10. Go play something you think you might not like see how it goes

@WomanDefiner This is actually one of Gunpei Yokoi's greatest legacies with the company, I think. Rather than jumping on the latest tech, Nintendo (largely) learned that making the most out of limited hardware by concentrating on making fun and/or novel experiences, you can print money.

@hopeslicergd I took a month off of working on my game. Spent the month playing games in my spare time instead of working on projects. I've been hammering away at it for 2 months since then, with results I'm rather happy with. Sometimes you really do just need to take a break to continue.

Solo game dev reality: You don’t need to work on your dream project 24/7. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is walk away for a bit before burnout eats your brain alive. I had to learn it the hard way for the past few weeks 🙃

@Kou_Italian No, it's because a large portion of the country regularly experiences 10-15F hotter than the weather you're complaining about, with humidity in the 80-90% range. The town I lived in down in Florida is expecting 89F with 97% humidity today. I walked 6-10 miles daily in that.

@SleepySatella @reddit_lies I've worked outside in 115F with 80% humidity. I have walked 5+ miles to and from work in 104F with over 90% humidity. This is the reality for a lot of Americans. Europeans talk a lot of shit from their postage stamp sized countries with populations the size of a large US city.

@reddit_lies You're joking, right? AC only helps when you're indoors. Are you admitting that you never go outside and have no real life responsibilities? Lmao. 104F is very close to the peak of Californian desert heat, in case anyone doesn't have a point of reference for how hot that is.

@revenant_MMXX We got an external drive for my father in law's PC and I rigged it to auto copy audio CDs with tags into flac format. It stays connected so he can just pop a disc in whenever he gets a new one. Works a charm for his needs, it's quiet, and even reads discs audio players won't.

@ipnotjcaa In the US, a budget window unit runs about $130-150. One nasty summer about 12 years back, I went to Wal-Mart at 2am when the direct deposit for my check hit. By 2:30am I had AC installed. By 3am I was sleeping like a baby in a nice, cool room. Not exactly a luxury item here.

@SandyofCthulhu More players need a "you know you suck at the game when you have to turn the difficulty UP to retarded" moment. Nothing wrong with playing on lower difficulties. Nothing wrong with the devs poking fun at you for doing it.

Are games insulting you? The Entertainment Software Association says that a "requirement" of games is to avoid naming difficulty levels in a way that "demeans players". For Wolfenstein, id Software literally gave the hero a baby bonnet and pacifier if he choose the wimpy difficulty. I guess the Entertainment Software Association's dictat is why Doom: Dark Ages replaced "I'm Too Young to Die" with "Aspiring Slayer." (Pussies) I am perfectly happy to be demeaned by a game that says I'm picking the baby level. You?

@kinsie The vetting process for custom engines is a lot more strict, from my understanding. That makes the process more difficult for small/new developers to get through. Mewgenics sold like hotcakes, it's in the console makers best interest to get a version. Boomer shooter #76 though..

@Pongtris Custom engines ain't the issue. A bunch of big-ticket indies roll their own tech (Mewgenics being a big example that's coming to consoles soon) because they can spare the sheer effort needed to get shit running on all the platforms without exploding.

Great for PC/Steam, but console ports are where this falls apart - most visible old engines like Quake, Doom etc. are GPL which is incompatible with console SDKs, and I think only Switch 1 is compatible with oldschool OpenGL.
Ian JCV@jnvcia

Everyone's too busy forcing UE5 to look like a 1998 engine. What they could do instead is just make 1998 engines, which were routinely created by teams of 1-2 people. Use OpenGL 1.2, people, it's still available, and your games will run at 5 trillion FPS while looking authentic.

@dandorf22 I think open world can work incredibly well for some games, but the recent trend of everything being open world got tiring quite some time ago. I'd like to see more curated experiences, whether they are open world or linear. It feels like a lot of modern games are bloated.

El mundo abierto es el cáncer del diseño moderno. Mapas gigantes llenos de recados repetitivos solo para justificar 100 horas de juego. Prefiero 8 horas de una experiencia lineal perfecta que 100 horas de caminar por el desierto. ¿Team Lineal o Team Open World? 🧐🧐🧐

@Doomfest That's fair, I suppose. I think Western devs have been more subject to publisher constraints than Japanese devs overall. Crunch time and holiday deadlines were definitely a thing back in the day. Probably wasn't easy to keep the original scope of the game, much less experiment.

western gamedev mentality has this obsession with adhering to the core experience that I think is harming creativity. Whenever I see jp indie dev make games there's a lot more of "Oh i just put this in here because I like it" but the same things would get shot down in the west

@TheMadToker777 I'll play older games more often than playing newer ones. Newer games take a lot more time, and often treat the player like an idiot, which makes them less "pick up and play." On the whole, it's a measure of "Is this worth the limited time I dedicate to gaming these days?"

@funnyToasty Very impressive. I remember back in the RPG Maker 2000 days, one of the people on our forums was meticulously designing a psuedo-3D battle engine with pre-rendered graphics and some clever events to simulate camera movement. Never underestimate the will of people to break stuff.

@mis0b_ Strictly speaking, much of Dragon Ball is retcons. Toriyama readily admitted that he didn't have any particular plan moving ahead and frequently forgot old details. That's why there are at least 3 logical "endings"; Freeza, Cell and Buu. It's also why Gero comes outta nowhere.

@ZeldaCycle Despite there being an official "timeline" that connects all the games, I've always taken them to largely be independent of one another. They are tangentially related to one another at most, aside from games that are directly connected (OOT/MM, BOTW/TOTK, Z1/Z2, Oracles).

It’s amazing how Zelda fans woke up one day and decided that the Wild games were reboots, and now a good chunk of the community accepts it as fact. Crazy stuff. Only in the Zelda community.
