Our first major initiative will be a Competitiveness Compass. Building on the 3 pillars of the Draghi report. Innovation, decarbonisation, security. Everyone in the team will contribute. Starting by unlocking the financing needed for the green, digital and social transition.

Fascinating. Virtually no Political Group in the Parliament will consistently vote for or against the new EU Commission Not even @vonderleyen's own party - the EPP - will do so, with the French, Spanish delegations voting against her. Not to mention @RenewEurope & @TheProgressives and of course the groups to the right of the EPP (also split)

We’ve got some early leaks on the European Commission’s thinking for the new "Competitiveness Fund" in the next EU budget. This fund is set to play a big role in shaping the EU’s long-term industrial policy ambitions, and so far, I’ve got mixed feelings. Two quick thoughts:

40% of projected IRA investments are paused or delayed bc of plummeting world prices, policy uncertainty, permitting issues, and a tougher macro climate. Instead of romanticizing US tax credits, EU policymakers should focus on what Europe can learn to develop nimbler instruments

For all the drama in France and Germany, projections of a broader hard-right takeover of the EU do not seem to have materialised. The new parliament will lean further to the right, but the wider shift to nationalist parties fizzled in many countries econ.st/3VAdoy0 👇

This looks like an olive branch to Le Pen. I wonder if she'll take it.

France: French President Emmanuel Macron (RE-RE) states that he will dissolve the national parliament for snap elections. This decision follows the poor result from the Bd'E list his party was leading in the European Parliament election, which only received 15.2% of the votes per an Ifop Fiducial exit poll. The first EU elections debate last night was striking in its geographical imbalance. All the candidates were northern European, except for one who kept on saying he is Moldovan (not in the EU). 6 of the 8 candidates could drive to each others' places without much trouble

VDL at fake presidential debate in Maastricht: "This election is about democracy, and democracy is about choices. My message tonight is: do not let others make the choice for you, your vote counts" [Narrator: your vote doesn't count. 27 people will choose the president for you]

Europe must urgently enact measures to push a “competitive industrial strategy” rivalling the IRA, including through an EU-wide state aid contribution mechanism, Enrico Letta will tell the 27 EU leaders in a special report on Thursday (17 April). 🔗eurac.tv/9WWt

I'd argue the EU has developed into two almost distinct political bodies - the 'Crisis EU', which is almost purely intergovernmental with a strong EUCO/Council plus Commission, and the 'Regulation/Legislation EU', with a strong Parliament, but which is often less visible.
Stanley Pignal@spignal

Telling example of how inter-governmentalism now rules the EU. 100% of the haggling over a new agri deal with Ukraine is down to the position of national capitals. Trade & agriculture are EU "competences", but zero role here for EU bodies like parliament ft.com/content/2d9210…

There will be as many EU summits in the next 100 days as all of 1986 and 1987 combined. The European Council has gone from being a high-level, set-the-direction-of-Europe event to the default setting for settling even mid-level issues.

Israel has killed over 11,500 Palestinian children in Gaza and the West Bank since October 7th, when 36 Israeli children were killed. It’s impossible to imagine that number. This is what it looks like. A line 5km long. (Location: Bournemouth Beach)
