To go forward, we must go back ... to Tyrion I in A Game of Thrones. Relive AGOT through Tyrion's eyes with us for the next year, and help us celebrate our final published POV (haha... unless...) in the ASOIAF Series. #ASOIAF

@LartinMeff Both ways have their weaknesses--do you spoil the reveal, or ruin the timeline?

@PoorQuentyn It jumped right into the Quentyn chapters from the start. It was a slightly modified A Ball with Beasts order, I believe the original pushes the Merchant's Man back and the Princess in the Tower *up* so that the reveal can happen in the correct order ballofbeasts.weebly.com/chapters.html

ADWD is the best one in terms of individually great chapters, great scenes, great moments. But in terms of structure it's the worst one, because it's a mess

@verissimoallan And I get why, with Davos at least--you need Wyman Manderly to start showing up in Theon chapters instead. But it stands out!

@PoorQuentyn The biggest example of this is Bran and Davos simply disappearing halfway through the book.

@LartinMeff I'm curious--in the order you read, did it jump into Quentyn chapters right away, or delay them until after Doran drops his "vengeance, justice, fire and blood" reveal?

@PoorQuentyn I've only read it with the combined order which probably helps the structure in the way you mention but does make the first half an enormous slog with half a dozen new POVs being introduced. Even if they are interesting it takes a very long time for the momentum to come back

A lot of this is fixed if you read Feast/Dance together via a combined reading order. But that has its own problems: jarring tone shifts, massive gaps for the smaller POVs, the impossibility of paralleling the Dornish storylines properly

Perfect example: Cersei's Walk is, on its own terms, one of the most powerful written and perfectly paced sequences in the whole story. But it would hit even harder if it came at the end of a book full of Cersei chapters. Instead, we're just suddenly checking back in with her

That's the struggle: if this is my job, and I hate it, do I even want this job? But how will I achieve my (admirable, necessary) goals without holding a position of power?

Even their enemies are (deliberately) boring. There's no rush to be had in dealing with a bland bureaucrat like Bowen Marsh, despite how awful his views are. You know who *is* fun to fight? Ramsay, because of his flamboyant cruelty...but fighting him is not technically Jon's job

"Uncathartic" is the key here, I think. Both Jon and Dany spend ADWD struggling with how little excitement or righteous release there is to be had in day-to-day governance, especially when they're trying to avoid open war
Coconut Tree Faller Outer Ofer@Cam_Oflage

(clarifying here that when I say grrm is pro-compromise I don't mean that he thinks the specific pseudo-peace that is in place in ADWD is right, I mean that he wants Dany to have to pursue justice in ways that compromise her personal +moral goals & are uncomfortable +uncathartic)

Young Grift, or something like him, has to exist because of Varys. We know he's up to *something* from his secret meeting with Illyrio. It isn't Dany because she hasn't hatched dragons yet, and it's hard to believe it was ever Viserys, the most obvious chump of all time
Red Jon Rivers@Knight_2359

Young Griff is great. He may be individually uninteresting but his presence creates a lot of rich emotion for Dany's story (literally trying to steal her claim, her story & her home) & for Varys' story (final jigsaw piece in the Where Power Resides riddle)
