Today I met my first-year undergraduate linguists and all three classes were an absolute pleasure: chatty, engaged, and enthusiastic about their studies. Bring on the year ahead!

@HareComedy I’m also questioning Alex’s. Sometimes ‘s constructions are considered a separate word, so my thinking is the ‘Alex’ is still present as a word, therefore it counts? (Absolutely love the spreadsheet btw!)

(Getting clarification on this felt extremely vindicating)

Taskmaster are running a viewer’s competition to count ‘How many times the word “Alex” is said across the series?’, and I bet they weren’t banking on a linguist wanting clarification on how they interpret ‘word’ lol

Next up: @HardieResearch running a lab on using CQPweb - the 🌈 effect is caused by the DLP projector rather than a new CQPweb skin in case you were wondering (though it would be a nice pride month feature)

The best part about it is the linguistics is sound - inconclusive due to small sample size

I cannot believe Corrie has a storyline where a ‘linguistics expert’ is consulted to analyse text messages, and said expert is called Claire!! I don’t suppose @DrClaireH was consulted at all?!

I also think it’s interesting that, for a lot of people (anecdotally), the misconceptions of OCD is usually the first thing they bring up when the topic arises

Whenever I tell people about my PhD, my heart does a little leap when they say something like ‘yeah people think OCD is about being neat but it’s so much more than that’. It’s even better when they’ve learned this from friends or relatives with OCD.

Today’s @corpusbaalsig symposium was great! Many of the talks focussed on learner corpora, which is a new field of study for me, so I enjoyed thinking about corpus linguistics in a different context from my PhD

@SarahMarieOB I feel this. Currently trying to sort out ergonomic equipment through DSA and this has been more stressful than my PhD work! Processes that are supposed to make academia easier for disabled people are rarely the case in my experience. I hope you get some breathing space soon.

The irony here being that it should or could be a simple and smooth process but actually, it's not, it's quite stressful trying to navigate it whilst trying to reduce stress as part of migraine management and reduction.

There's a bit of irony going on for me atm. I've interrupted (or at least tried to) my PhD as I'm experiencing migraines 4-5 days a week. 1. Interrupting is a maze to navigate 2. Funder policies don't make this easy 3. GPs brush it off as just a headache

Submit to OCD in Society ⬇️ Unfortunately I’m not in a position to present anything from my PhD (yet!), but I’m certainly looking forward all things Language and OCD!

Today, for the first time, I’ve found myself referenced in a journal article I was reading, and I was not ready for the Citation High

I am in awe of how Eva weaves her academic research and lived experience of OCD in this article. Incredibly well-written and insightful ⬇️
