Excluding Natives, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and First Nations peoples from diversity studies like this - no matter how small the percentage - directly contributes to our erasure. Mascots, exclusion in diversity studies, etc. are compounded issues.

#1 There needs to be more BIPOC representation across the board. #2 Indigenous peoples are not even mentioned. We are fighting mascots because the stereotypes and lack of contemporary representation are why we struggle with hyper invisibility.

Since the last study on sourcing diversity (based on 2015 data), @NPR racial and ethnic diversity for on-air sources declined. The percentage of sources of color decreased from 27% in 2015 to 20% in 2018.

Attn Tulsa, Oklahoma, Union Public School alums, and/or folks who want to help eliminate Native mascots in OK, follow this account. Write letters to school boards. Share your stories of how negative representations of Natives affected your life. Demand that Union & TPS change.

Did you know that in the 1940s @NCAI1944 created a campaign to eliminate negative stereotypes of Natives in the media? Did you know that the fight to remove Native mascots was happening then too? Stereotypical images and caricatures of Natives have been and continue to be wrong.
