I have a story about that: When I was at China Lake we were a very small detachment of Marines. But we were also self sufficient. So we had our own full S-1/Admin shop. One day I don't get paid, and I go into the S-1 to see what's going on. Long story short: I reenlisted, and there was some delay on the paperwork. So I didn't get paid, because the military was unaware that I had reenlisted. I'm pretty upset, and the NCOs are trying to figure out what went down, and how I got missed. The S-1 Staff Sargent tells me it will be fixed by next payday. I'm getting pissed that I'm not getting paid for two weeks, and the Staff Sargent tells me that "some times this happens, and I just have to deal with it." So the S-1 officer hearing the commotion comes out of his office, coffee mug in hand and asks a simple question: "did I just hear that one of our Marines didn't get paid?..." The S-1 officer is a CWO3. CWO's (Chief Warrant Officers) are all prior enlisted, and technical experts in their military job. So he's basically an S-1 God. The unit at CL was the only time I ever saw a S-1 shop with a CWO. So I explained what happened, and CWO3 looks at one of the S-1 Sargents and simply says "call Camp Pendleton right now, explain what happened, and that we messed up. If we get them all of the info by 9am they should be able to run a special payment today." He looks back over to me, apologizes for their error, and let me know that if my money is not in my account with 48 hours of right then to come back, and I will get paid out of the units funds until I get my proper paycheck. He then turns to the Staff Sargent and says "come into my office, and please explain to me why you think it's OK to have our Marines work without pay." My paycheck hit my bank that night.
