Delhi High Court Issues Notice in UGC-NET Petition!
The Hon’ble Delhi High Court has issued notice to the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Education, and National Testing Agency (NTA) in a significant petition.
The petition, filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, highlights pressing concerns about the recent UGC-NET examination. It seeks comprehensive reforms to address systemic issues such as:
1.Flawed Normalization Process: A demand to rectify anomalies in score normalization and to publish fair and transparent results for all candidates.
2.Reservation Policy Implementation: Strict adherence to constitutionally mandated quotas for OBC, SC, and ST categories, ensuring equitable distribution of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) slots.
3.Linguistic Equality: A revision of discriminatory provisions that prioritize English over Hindi in cases of discrepancies in question papers, ensuring equal treatment for Hindi-medium candidates.
4.Examination Reform: Proposals to conduct UGC-NET in a single shift to eliminate score discrepancies and rationalize the fee for challenging errors in question papers to make the grievance process more accessible.
5.Transparency and Accountability: A call for public disclosure of the normalization formulas, cut-off criteria, and question selection methodologies to restore faith in the examination process.
6.Structural Reforms: The establishment of a Centralised Examination Tribunal to independently address grievances in National level competitive examinations and regional tribunals to address the grievances of State Level competitive examinations.
The petition underscores the need to uphold the principles of fairness, equality, and transparency in India’s education system. I just want to say that, “This is not just about one examination; it’s about ensuring justice for thousands of aspirants whose futures are tied to these results. The current system needs urgent reforms to align with constitutional values.”
The Hon’ble Delhi High Court’s issuance of notice to the respondents is a significant step forward, compelling them to address these critical issues. The matter is now scheduled for its next hearing on 7th January 2025, marking an important phase in the fight for justice for lakhs of NET JRF students nationwide.
