Save this tweet if you are ever brought for RR (Random Review or Random Referral) at Indian immigration during your next international trip from India. Why am I writing this? Randomly saw someone's video on Insta and he was sharing his experience of the typical playbook exercise of corruption at Indian immigration and his lack of knowledge was almost used against him. What is RR and how do you know if you have been picked for this? This can be randomly printed on your boarding pass and will read exactly as RR and even if you have an egate, you will have to see a customs officer, who will then take you to the interrogation room ( in delhi it is at the extreme right side next to business class security). What this instagrammer say? He had a RR in his boarding and he was asked to see the customs during his exit immigration, he obliged. He was asked about his profession and immediately they jumped on how much money does he have (he even played an audio recording, he recorded it) He had some cash, and the customs officer started asking for a receipt and they weren't ready to let him go, I don't remember the amount but it wasn't substantial. He said they only allowed after he showed that he is legit and has Instagram account, he had million followers. His understanding was because he seemed genuine, has good travel history he was allowed But I see this differently and him being allowed was because of the risk for those who were questioning him getting exposed infront of 2 mill followers. Now, I know folks who were harassed in similar manner and what was common was bribe being asked and they were only allowed after sparing the "USDs" that they were carrying without receipt. Always remember, "A resident Indian can retain up to USD 2,000 equivalent in foreign currency notes/traveller’s cheques for future travel without needing to surrender it" So you are in all your rights to have any equivalent currency lesser than 2K USD without any receipt, don't give in to the pressure or bullying, instead probably ask for supervisor or in written. Yes Cutsoms have the right to question and do their due diligence but understand the difference between harassment and rules. Don't get carried away or scared, know your rights.
