While Angola is Africa's second-largest crude producer, it has historically lacked the infrastructure to turn that oil into the Petrol and Diesel we use. * 🏗️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗹𝗲: For decades, Angola exported nearly 100% of its crude and imported 80% of its refined fuel. Building refineries costs billions—money that was often lost to corruption or diverted during years of civil war. * 🏭 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Change is coming, but slowly. The new 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 just hit a milestone in February 2026, but it currently only satisfies about 10% of Angola's own internal demand. * 🚢 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽: In the short term, it is actually cheaper to buy refined fuel from the Middle East. Africa lacks the cross-border pipelines needed to move fuel efficiently between neighbours, meaning we rely on expensive sea freight. * 💸 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿: Even today, Angola spent over 𝗨𝗦$𝟴𝟱𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in just one quarter (Q4 2025) on its own fuel imports. They simply don't have enough "spare" Petrol to solve Zimbabwe's crisis. The current war is putting our dependence on the Middle East to the ultimate test.
