@Genki_JPN To be fair to Yoshida and co., these are the same devs who made the King's Field games and a bunch of mid-tier titles. When people think triple-A system seller, a King's Field game is the last thing on any sane person's mind.

Shuhei Yoshida shared the story of how PlayStation dropped the ball with Demon's Souls and FromSoftware back on PS3! He said he had just returned to Japan after being stationed in the US. Demon Soul was almost complete and he got to try it at the office. He played for 2 hours but was still stuck at the very beginning because he kept on dying and having to start over again. He thought “what an incredibly difficult game” and he told the QA team “it's difficult, right?”. So, just before its release there wasn't much excitement about the game and the Famitsu review was also not very high. Its initial shipments were very low. To make matters worse, PlayStation’s international publishing branches of US, Japan and Europe were all operating independently from each other. Uncertainty about the game's quality was shared inside the company and America and Europe both decided to pass on the game and said they won't publish it. However, after the game was released in Japan people began to talk about it online on sites like 2chan and hype began to build for the game saying “this is actually super fun” and “this is a god-tier game” and its reputation started to snowball. Then Atlus in America and Bandai Namco in Europe said we will release it and picked it up and it became a hit. When it came to the next game. Sony had finally realized it was a great concept and new type of game and they approached FromSoft saying they want to be involved. But Fromsoft turned them down saying “Sony didn't support Demon Souls, did you?” Then they went with Bandai Namco and changed the name to “Dark Souls”. He said he often gets criticized by overseas users saying “ You’re the Yoshida who didn't recognize the appeal of Demon’s Souls, right?”. He said he had a preconceived notion in his head that action games needed to be designed to smoothly guide the player towards enjoyment. He failed to grasp the true intent of the game from its creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. The lesson he learnt is that he needs to talk to creators first to understand the experience and vision they are trying to create beforehand. In the end he says Miyazaki’s games, Dark Souls and Elden Ring, have become massive hits worldwide so it was probably for the best for the industry and gamers that they dropped the ball with the Demon’s Souls. And the lessons from Demon’s Souls allowed them to work together again on Bloodborne later on. youtube.com/live/O6zh953We…

@yakuza3d2a Can you blame them when certain AAA games made it a point to differentiate the two elements. The players don't get to participate in the story and often times the gameplay serve as a bridge between two cutscenes. Games that don't do this like undertale are the exceptions.

@AFMORAN1990 @Bestofsopranos I think the show made it a point that both Carmella and Meadow knew their situation. Carmella enjoyed her lifestyle, Meadow often defended his father against outsiders. Neither of them engaged in illegal activities so the FBI couldn't blackmail them into being a snitch

best of the sopranos
best of the sopranos@Bestofsopranos·
One of the first times The Sopranos tells you exactly what kind of show it is comes when Meadow asks Tony a very simple question: “Are you in the Mafia?” Tony doesn’t answer like a criminal who has been caught. He answers like an offended suburban father. He talks about waste management. Italian-American stereotypes. The insult of his own daughter believing such a thing. “There is no Mafia.” It would almost work if Meadow were still a child. But she has lived in that house her entire life. She has seen the money, the visitors and the way certain conversations suddenly stop when she enters a room. She isn’t asking because she needs information. She is giving Tony a chance to stop insulting her intelligence. “Dad, I’ve lived in the house all my life.” That is the line that punctures the whole performance. Tony thinks he has kept his two lives separate. Meadow quietly tells him that the separation never existed. Eventually, he gives her something: “Part of my income comes from legitimate businesses.” A perfect Tony Soprano confession. Not quite a lie, but nowhere near the truth. He admits just enough to feel honest while keeping everything ugly safely unnamed. And Meadow sees exactly what he is doing. The strange part is that Tony almost seems proud of her. She figured him out. She is smart enough to see through the waste-management story and force him closer to the truth than most people ever get. But closer is as far as Tony can go. He wants the intimacy of being an honest father without surrendering the secrecy that keeps him alive as a gangster. He cannot have both. That conflict is already there in the first season. Tony can hide evidence, intimidate witnesses and lie to investigators. But the FBI needs proof. Meadow doesn’t.

Florence Pugh explains how intimacy coordinators changed filming sex scenes Louis Theroux: How kind of literal is it? Florence Pugh: Whereas before, that was never the case. Louis Theroux: Really? Florence Pugh: Before, whenever you’d come to a sex scene, you’d come to set and you’d start talking about it then. You’d be trying to discuss what your vision was or what their vision was, and it was all only in that moment that you’d be discussing it. It would feel a bit strange or a bit awkward., whereas I think now the communication happens for a good chunk of time beforehand. You have safe words, you have areas that you don’t like being touched, areas that are fine for someone to touch. All of these conversations are actually now happening, whereas before they didn’t happen. Louis Theroux: Are some bits taped off? Would you wear little slips and things? Florence Pugh: Yes. It’s their job to be in charge of that. Before, there wasn’t a specific person on set to be in charge of your coverage. I had experience in the past where we were using wig glue to stitch me down because someone wasn’t really thinking about it. But you’ve now got a dedicated person that is there to make sure that all of your comfort is being thought about. Your lawyer will basically be going through a nudity rider, what you are allowing and what you’re not allowing. Louis Theroux: And it will be spelled out? Florence Pugh: Yes. Louis Theroux: What? Florence Pugh: Nipple will be on show, upper breast will not show, vagina will not show. Everything has to be spelled out, everybody has to be so tender because it’s very exposing. The crew are super respectful, everybody looks away when you undress. Everybody looks away when you dress, everybody’s very, very aware of how gentle the day should feel.

@Lol8ball Wait people think matosis mostly makes negative videos? He liferally started the channel with Zelda and MGS then the souls series. He also praised BotW when arcade bros and most older Zelda fans were hating on it

Turning mindless consumerism into a force of good. Raden is goated
Risu_Ekorn@Risu_Ekorn

@happy__yorkie Supporting Raden is a no-brainer given how much she spreads awareness about and donates to art museums and Japanese art in general. She has superchats turned off because she'd rather have people spend that money going to museums and giving them a chance.

@_realsteele @Niflheimm155983 Reminds me of people whining about runbacks in souls games. The real tragedy is that Fromsoft listened to feedback and removed runbacks from their later games.

Ninja Gaiden does not get nearly enough flak for slowly fading to black, then slowly fading in the chapter name / description, then going to a loading screen, every single time you die It’s inexcusable for a hardcore, difficult, supposedly fast paced game to take like a minute to get back into it every time you die, and I wouldn’t blame someone in the slightest if it stopped them from enjoying these games altogether. We’re talking about literal hours of time Even the most simplistic, barebones, unnecessary runback in a souls game or silksong is 100x better for the simple fact that you’re in control and doing something, instead of just impatiently mashing the skip button, stewing in your frustration

@HmmHrmHarumph @BladerLBM People haven't found a way to articulate how world and environment design affects the mood of the player exploring it so they've settled for "good vibes"?

One of the side effects of "vibes" not being taken seriously, is people having to pretend like "exploration" is serious game design

@petey_fo_really @BladerLBM I guess we are still light years away from seeing exploration for exploration's and not as a means of obtaining rewards even though games like Zelda (both old and new) frequently made it a point to focus on the experience of exploring (or doing anything) over rewards.

@BladerLBM Imho exploration is similar to opening loot boxes. You have possible paths (boxes) You pick one to go down (opening it) You get a reward- content, items, stats etc... If the reward function is poorly tuned you feel no need to go open boxes.

@BladerLBM @Moth_Lobster Yes of course. Many games hinge on the player not knowing stuff. Games like Outer Wilds or Obra Dinn cannot be replayed for the same reason. Not knowing where the next bonfire is in DS or not knowing how big the sea is in Subnautica adds thrill to the experience

@PramitPratim @IReekofTrash69 @notskillo @creamloads @Ablazeolive Theres not a single skill transferible from starcraft to league That isn't also transferible from other games to league Saying "micro" is a skill you get from sc to league is absurdly stupid when that could come from 60 different other games

@d0gmaballs @natisneato A game should have different writing goals than other fiction but in most cases they don't. A lot of times writing serves the same purpose they would in a movie. So people often judge writing they would in a movie

because some video games which possess undeniable artistic contain a lot of words, people seem to think that artistic merit is derived from the quality of the prose, or the dialogue, or how soundly the plot is constructed. This is wrong, but it's an understandable impulse I think
eyebags@EyebagsCat

Baldurs Gate 3 has really bad writing by book standards, okay writing by videogame standards, EXTREMELY GOOD WRITING by ''your choices matter'' videogame standards. People don't understand how tremendously hard it is to write these games, seriously
