MARRIAGE SERIES: DEALING WITH CONFLICT Matthew 1:18-19 (NKJV): “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.” When Joseph learnt about Mary’s pregnancy, he made the decision to put her away secretly so that he would not shame her. One can only imagine the pain, confusion and disappointment he must have felt. In his mind, the woman to whom he was betrothed appeared to have betrayed him. He must have struggled to believe Mary’s explanation that she had conceived by the Holy Spirit. Yet, in all this, Joseph behaved honourably. There is a great lesson to learn from how Joseph treated this situation. He did not seek to disgrace his espoused in spite of what seemed to be a serious mistake on her part. The Bible calls him a just man, and this was revealed in how he handled her. Today, we live in a generation where a spouse who feels wronged may quickly turn to social media, television or public platforms to reveal everything they consider evil or wicked about their partner. But where is the justice, righteousness or wisdom in washing dirty linen in public? Yes, your partner may have issues of character and serious weaknesses, but is telling everyone willing to listen the best way to respond? From Joseph, we learn that it is the mark of goodness when a person does not seek to expose the weakness of their spouse. It is wisdom to cover even when one has been hurt, to protect even where one has been offended, and to preserve dignity even in moments of disappointment. A righteous person knows that there are matters to be handled privately, prayerfully and with the fear of God. FURTHER STUDY: Proverbs 10:12; Proverbs 11:13 PRAYER: Father, I thank You for the wisdom in Your Word. You teach me to handle conflict with honour, restraint and love. I will never expose the weaknesses of my spouse but walk in righteousness, discretion and mercy. I receive the grace to cover, protect and respond in wisdom, even when I am hurt or offended. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
