thinking it important to keep up i spent the day reading the news great waves of darkness rolled in and when the filthy water reached my neck leaving me questioning everything including breathing i had to stop and treading water made it back to shore wondering why i bothered ~ RC deWinter

that online thing the small screen glows bluely
in the darkened room.
my eyes unfocus sometimes;
i spend many hours of every day
staring at words and punctuation,
staring at pixels, light and color,
proportion and alignment,
focusing on what i call
cunt-hair corrections,
and even then i miss a few. even with all that punishment
to the eyes,
when the work is done and i can relax
i grab the phone and boot
the only world of friends i know.
we talk, we laugh,
we bitch about life and love –
or in some cases, the lack of it.
there’s bitter griping
about our country, the world and our place in it. some don’t understand
this dedication to a universe unreal,
but if you live a life like mine
you surely do. 
it’s a reaching out
for light and warmth and
the sound of another human voice,
even if that voice is reduced to
billions of dots in black
on that bluegray screen. some do it because they’re bored,
some do it because what’s sitting at home with them is unfaceable,
some do it because they’re afraid
to touch another in any other way. 
but we all do it –
hour after hour, day after day,
night after night –
because someplace deep in our souls

Brian May's band covers Rainbow's "Since You've Been Gone" live at Brixton Academy (1993) “Touring as a front man, following Freddie’s passing, I was in complete denial of Queen, and regarded my new band as my future. I was blessed with the massive support of the late great Cozy Powell on drums. Here we see Cozy in fabulous form. Of course, when Ritchie Blackmore’s band, Rainbow, recorded the monumental version of this song that charted in 1979, Cozy had been the drummer, and for me, covering this track live was a kind of homage to Cozy. The vocal is almost impossibly rangey, and I made it a personal crusade to work on my voice, extending my range so I could sing it. The band was a dream outfit for me … with already legendary heavy rock stalwart Neil Murray on bass, who had worked with Cozy (and my friend Tony Iommi) in one of the incarnations of Black Sabbath, long-time Queen collaborator Spike Edney on keys, newly recruited Jamie Moses on guitar, who remains a great friend to this day, and two stunning backing vocalists, Catherine Porter and Shelley Preston.
