Honored to speak on the Senate floor about Myrick Howard who spent 45 years leading @PreservationNC. On many evenings, our family takes a walk past both the Hall and Graves-Fields Houses that are part of the historic Oberlin Village, the longest surviving Reconstruction-era freedman colony known Wake County. We’re grateful for Myrick’s commitment to historic preservation that reflects the rich and diverse history of our city and our state.

Thanks to @PreservationNC for their work on this Civil Rights Trail historical marker commemorating the birth of early civil rights lawyer and Raleigh native Willis Graves, Jr, right in Oberlin Village. The site is now their HQ, where they work to preserve and honor NC’s history.

Many recognize the work of musician Earl Scruggs through his popular work such as his banjo instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", as well as his work for the television sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. Others enjoy his "Scruggs style" and three-finger style of Bluegrass.

The Earl Scruggs Homeplace, located near Shelby, was constructed around 1920. Last month, Preservation North Carolina accepted a preservation easement on the site from the Earl Scruggs Center to ensure the long-term protection of the property!

Enjoy the recently screened-in porch, fenced yard, and walk-in attic. A new metal roof added in 2022 caps off the property nicely. A past recipient of the Minetree Pyne Preservation Award, this home offers a rare blend of history and modern amenities.
