Tribe: Nuba (diverse collection of 50+ ethnic groups in South Kordofan, Sudan), known for body arts, wrestling, and pastoral/agricultural life.
History & Process: Ancient African tradition (evidenced in prehistoric rock art and ancient Nubia). Skin is cut and treated with ash to form raised keloids in staged sessions.
Culture: Primarily for women as marks of beauty, maturity, and life stages (puberty, menstruation, motherhood). Patterns on back/torso signify strength, fertility, identity, and social status. Some believed protective/medical benefits. Men participate less extensively; body painting is also key.
Descendants: Current Nuba communities in Sudan. The practice has largely declined due to religion, modernization, education, and conflict, though cultural pride and some heritage elements persist. Similar traditions continue in reduced form in parts of Ethiopia and South Sudan.
These photos (style reminiscent of mid-20th-century ethnographic works) celebrate a resilient form of body art expressing identity and endurance.
