There is a lot going on with the Jake Claver theory — and some people understand the Japan element of it, and some don’t. I came across a graphic that appears to show a spike in oil. It wasn’t oil in dollars. It was oil priced in yen. That distinction matters. That graphic that was posted was misleading — not intentionally — but misunderstood. Because when the yen is weak vs the dollar, even a flat oil price can look like a spike depending on how the graph is constructed and what time window you’re looking at. A 1–2 day move in FX can visually exaggerate price action. So let’s ground it. CRUDE OIL — YEN VS USD (APPROX.) The commodity price excludes everything required to physically MOVE, PROTECT, INSURE, SECURE, AND DELIVER that oil. Think RACK PRICE vs DELIVERED PRICE. Or better: The cost of the pizza vs pizza + toppings + delivery + tip. Now let’s do the actual Japan math. ⸻ THE JAPAN MATH 1.Japan imports 99% of its oil. Almost all of it arrives by tanker. That alone adds layers and layers of cost. ⸻ 2.Freight / Ship Charter VLCC = VERY LARGE CRUDE CARRIER Capacity: 200,000 – 320,000 metric tons Most common route: Middle East → Japan Typical freight range: $2.50 – $4.50 per barrel But that’s just the headline. PRIMARY COST DRIVERS (THESE MATTER MORE THAN PEOPLE REALIZE): 1.Fuel 2.Distance (20–40 days) 3.Port congestion & Asia traffic premiums Let’s unpack the ones that explode costs. ⸻ PORT CONGESTION (THIS IS THE KILLER) Port congestion affects the entire voyage, not just unloading. It drives: • Extra crew hours • Late fees • Operational expenses • Opportunity cost on massive assets Congestion comes from: • High traffic • Weather • Infrastructure breakdowns • Labor strikes Costs can jump 10–25% fast. Unloading time (“laytime”) is usually 72–96 hours. Miss that window?
