The #LastBattleOnEnglishSoil didn't end with the surrender of the Jacobite troops on Preston market place at 7am on 14 November 1715. The Government troops were allowed to plunder the town, stealing 'moneys, plate, goods and chatles ... contrary to the laws of this nation'.

Day 2 of the #LastBattleOnEnglishSoil and General Wills' (left) and Thomas Forster's failings come to the fore. General Carpenter arrives in Preston and sorts out the Govt army's positions. Forster gives up and negotiates a Jacobite surrender, against the wishes of his officers.

@cheapsellotape We are shockingly behind this year, but a trawl through past posts tells more of the story of a widely overlooked and underestimated battle. You should also find a link to the app. Thank you for your interest!

@cheapsellotape We may be pedantic, but technically the Jacobites surrendered! And not until 14 November. On 12 November it was still fairly evenly matched. It took General Carpenter's arrival to get the Government forces sorted.

@Preston1715 @natlibscot Presumably the Friargate barricade would've been on the brow of the hill? I suppose you have to remember that it wasn't bisected by the ring road so would've been a fairly long drag. Thanks for the info.

13 November 1715. The #Jacobite successes of the previous day are lost with the arrival of General Carpenter to sort out the government army under General Wills. And the loss of nerve of Thomas Forster, the supposed leader of the Jacobites, who starts negotiating a surrender.

@FieryJack2 @natlibscot ...The church - though replaced - is still on the same footprint and the tower a good lookout down Church Street. And there are the remains of a windmill near the windmill barricade. It is fascinating, which is why we keep this going. Thank you for your interest.

@FieryJack2 @natlibscot There isn't any monument but the streets still tell the story of the battle - if you have the leaflet or app in hand. This shop on the Flag Market witnessed the surrender. Walk the length of Friargate and you can see where you'd build a barricade - and where the Jacobites did...

11 November 1715. #Jacobite army is digging in - literally - in #Preston. Their leaders now know Gen Carpenter is on his way from the north and Gen Wills is 20 miles south in Wigan. Barricades being built on the three key streets. M marks the spot...

9th November 1715. The #Jacobite army leave Lancaster, having heard General Carpenter is on his way. They take the six cannon from Sunderland Point with them. By evening, the foot soldiers are in #Garstang and the mounted troops have reached #Preston.

8th November 1715. Still in #Lancaster, the #Jacobite army took six cannon off a ship at Sunderland Point, went to church and prayed for King James, and the gentlemen dallied with the local ladies over a dish of tea.

7th November 1715. The #Jacobite army marched into 'a county full of papists and disaffected persons by whom they will probably be joyned'. They were indeed joined by local Catholic gentlemen and others. The militia had abandoned Lancaster and the town was generally welcoming.
