Magistrate TA Mokgwatlheng informed Mautla of the potential sentences. Neighbors claim Mautla had tested the gun at a soccer field earlier that day, firing several shots into the air.

Mautla was arrested and appeared at the Moretele magistrate's court, where she faces a possible 15-year sentence for murder or life imprisonment if the court determines the murder was premeditated.
