The Week That Was | Executive Mayor of Tshwane’s Diary: 13 July - 18 July 2026 📈City of Tshwane Infrastructure Roundtable: Tshwane hosted a successful Infrastructure Roundtable with public sector stakeholders and infrastructure funding institutions. The purpose of this engagement was to strengthen pathways to funding Tshwane’s infrastructure investment ambition in line with Tshwane’s Economic Revitalisation Strategy. 👮🏽‍♂️Bad Buildings Operation - Proclamation Hill: The City’s Bad Buildings Committee inspected properties in Proclamation Hill. Building Control issued 21-day notices for unauthorised building structures. Our Energy and Electricity Business Unit removed illegal electricity connections, while our Water and Sanitation Business Unit removed illegal water connections. 📻 TUT FM 32 Birthday Gala Dinner: We joined the Tshwane University of Technology to celebrate TUT FM’s 32nd birthday. ⚡️Sunnyside Substation Power Outage Oversight: We made an oversight inspection to oversee power restoration work by the City’s Energy and Electricity Department at the Sunnyside Substation. 📋Stakeholder Engagement in Region 7: We held an engagement with businesses and community leaders in Region 7 regarding the enforcement of municipal by-laws. This engagement followed a memorandum that was submitted to the City by concerned members of the community. 📚👩🏽‍🎓Tshwane University of Technology Students Engagement: We joined public affairs students from TUT’s Public Management Department, at the Union Buildings, for a discussion about the importance of local government and the work undertaken everyday to govern a metropolitan City. 🇿🇦 Special Economic Zones Conference: I attended South Africa’s Second International Special Economic Zones Conference hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, in Durban. The theme for this year’s engagement was “reigniting Industrialisation through World Class SEZs”. I also joined a panel discussion anchored on the topic: SEZs as engines for spatial industrial development. 🇿🇦Mandela Day: We joined beautician, Thato, in Atteridgeville for Mandela Day. We spent the morning with elderly women from Atteridgeville who were treated to beauty treatments as part of the City’s 67 Acts of Dignity in honour of Mandela Day. @CityTshwane

Gogos are often the pillars of households and of society. Their service to building families and strengthening communities often knows no bounds. We spent the morning in Atteridgeville with bonkgono ba rena to show gratitude. This was our chance to celebrate their contributions and remind them that they are not forgotten. #MandelaDay @CityTshwane

#MandelaDay reminds us that service is not measured by the size of the gesture, but by the difference it makes in the life of another person. It also reminds us that our elderly deserve to be honoured, not only for what they have done, but for who they are. They have cared for our families, built our communities and helped shape the City we call home. They deserve to feel valued, respected and cared for every day. @CityTshwane

#MandelaDay: We are in Atteridgeville to spend the day with Thato as she hosts a special event for the Gogos of Atteridgeville. We first met Thato in May, when she invited us to join this special event. She runs Lacquer Nail & Beauty Clinic and, twice a week, she hosts elderly women for beauty treatments. This is our 67 Acts of Dignity in honour of #MandelaDay. @CityTshwane

There is a small but extremely industrious class of South African progressive intellectuals whose primary occupation appears to be diagnosing the political illnesses of people they have never met. Let a group of Black citizens gather outside a government building and demand land, jobs, functioning borders or economic sovereignty, and somewhere an academic’s laptop immediately begins to glow. Within minutes, the nation is warned of a dangerous outbreak of nativism. If the crowd grows, it develops into populism. If somebody sings, it becomes ethno-nationalism. Should an elderly woman wave a stick, we have entered the early stages of authoritarian majoritarianism. By sunset, a webinar has been convened. Service Delivery War-room on the go 🚍 This morning, the Mayoral Executive made an oversight visit to Cemetery View and Plastic View informal settlements in Region 6. Cemetery View, established in 2010, has 172 households with about 70% of the population documented as foreign nationals. The City is working on 800 housing opportunities in Pretorius Park to provide sustainable housing solutions for eligible South African nationals who reside in this area In Plastic View, EPWP teams will conduct a headcount to better understand how many South Africans and foreign nationals reside in the area. The City is working on preventing further expansion of the informal settlements. We have also aimed to improve service delivery through the provision of communal taps. @CityTshwane @maluksa
