@Prettyskyfru @Hugh_higgler My idiot doctor put me in the ER twice because he kept giving heart medication that I'm allergic too. I kept telling my BP is sky high from anxiety due to a TBI. I finally fired him and my new dr gave me the propranolol and it works wayy wayy better

After being prescribed propranolol (beta blocker whose on-label usage is typically heart problems) to deal with anxiety/stress (I hate taking meds but I really couldn’t take it anymore, job I hate was giving debilitating symptoms), SSRIs seem even more stupid to me now than they did before. Propranolol basically shut down my body’s ability to feel stress. Zero racing heart, appetite comes back, normal BP. Job interviews are a complete breeze and I’ll probably be out of this dogshit situation soon. It’s insane that SSRIs are often a first-line treatment for anxiety problems. All I had to do was say I won’t take SSRIs under any circumstance and they prescribed this.

@Hugh_higgler I've been prescribed hydroxyzine for sleep but it's been years since I've taken that. I think once I'm finally off cymbalta I'll discuss this as well with my doctor. Thank you for posting what you did, it gave me a different perspective.

For me the combination of propranolol and hydroxyzine seems to work better than benzodiazepines even. I went to the doctor for something else before I got the beta blockers and because my BP and stress levels were so high he prescribed (in my opinion an irresponsible amount) Valium. I’ve taken some of them but it really doesn’t seem any more useful than those other 2. And they’re so addictive. Hydroxyzine is basically like a better Benadryl (doesn’t make me as tired and def makes me calmer)

@Hugh_higgler I tried telling all the doctors the very same thing. "I wake up in the middle of the night out of a dead sleep, heart racing, tingling clammy hands, feeling like I'm dying, pure terror, impending feeling of doom, I'm calling 911". Doctor: "Take this drug that steals your joy."

Yeah it really helps me. Some doctors will act like they aren’t effective or shouldn’t be used primarily for anxiety because they don’t “address the psychological causes of anxiety” and only alleviate physical symptoms. But when my heart isn’t racing and my blood pressure isn’t high from stress I feel calmer by default so it clearly helps a lot..I think doctors just like pushing more expensive medicines
