Just found in my laptop 100GB of ZIPPED result files waiting to be imported to the index. So index size is like a lot higher than I thought. Just need to import them. No promises but that could be another 100M

What a great argument! I learned so much now is my turn I've been to the Proton offices couple of times, I am friends with them, their client is open-source, their UI is very nice significantly better than Tuta and now you can pay indirectly with Monero Oh and because I'm friends with them, whenever I have a problem I can DM them and get it fixed Thanks for your argument against Proton, I learned absolutely nothing

@wartimeagitprop @iAnonymous3000 PriEco is still very small, I'm growing it but it is going to take some time. Ranking (quality) still is fairly primitive too Presearch has some initiative to create own index but for now they almost fully rely on third party providers: Google, Bing PriEco is independent

Startpage markets itself as “the world’s most private search engine.” Startpage is majority-owned by System1 (NYSE: SST) - a publicly traded ad tech company with a fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder revenue. The acquisition was made through an entity called Privacy One Group. The transparency around that deal was poor enough that @privacy_guides temporarily delisted Startpage in 2019. In 2024, users documented requests to vf.startpage.com carrying data associated with browser fingerprinting, including canvas, WebGL, and other browser characteristics. Startpage said it makes periodic exceptions for bot detection. They did NOT announce this feature proactively. They were caught by users running anti-fingerprinting extensions. In 2025, users on the Privacy Guides forum documented that Google’s srsltid tracking parameter was leaking through Startpage’s results into destination URLs. Startpage publicly cited EuroPriSe certification was postponed in 2017 and never renewed - meaning the last independent audit predates the System1 era entirely.

GrapheneOS is right that Linux security needs structural reform but the problems go deeper than just the kernel by the way. Many of the most aggressive exploit mitigations historically lived downstream in PaX/grsecurity - while upstream Linux has adopted hardening more slowly. Rust adoption is still tiny relative to the C codebase. The bigger problem is the user-space security model. On Android - each app gets its own UID and runs in an isolated sandbox. On desktop Linux, most applications run as your single user account. A malicious program does not need root to read your SSH keys, browser session data, or crypto wallets. The traditional UNIX model protects users from each other far better than it protects apps from each other. X11 makes this worse. Its security model assumes clients are largely trusted - which means a graphical app can often spy on input, clipboard contents, or other windows. Wayland improves this - but Linux desktop is still in a transition period. Linux is trying to adopt sandboxing through Flatpak and containers - but that depends heavily on namespaces and careful policy. Hardening unprivileged user namespaces can conflict with that approach, and many Flatpak apps also request broad filesystem access that weakens the sandbox in practice. Traditional Linux package managers are another weak point. Package installation commonly runs maintainer scripts with elevated privileges - so a compromised package can become a full-system compromise. That is a much riskier software distribution model than mobile platforms. Boot integrity is also less uniform than on mobile. Linux can do Secure Boot, measured boot, IMA/EVM, and unified kernel images - but these protections are optional and fragmented across distros and hardware. Android’s verified-boot model is much more standardized. And patch lag is an issue too. In the Linux kernel, important security fixes are NOT always clearly tagged as CVEs - which means distros on older kernels can remain exposed to known-bad code longer than users realize.
