Today marks 110 years since Noor Inayat Khan was born. She went on to become one of #ww2 most famous #secretagents. Working in occupied #Paris, she was betrayed, arrested and after two escape attempts from Gestapo HQ was executed at #dachau. #SOE #history #HERstory #heroine

On this day Dec 31st, 1941, Lt John Steel "Jock" Lewes, co-founder of the Special Air Service (SAS) during WW2, was killed in action in Libya. Lewes was returning from a raid when his group came under attack from a German aircraft. RIP Warrior. 🙏#Jock #lewes #sas

In October 1945, the Special Air Service would be summarily disbanded, Lt-Col Blair Paddy Mayne being forced to take the final salute and march past. As SAS original Reg Seekings would lament, ‘It was like the bottom dropping out of the world. You were lost.’ Or, as John Randall, the first man into Belsen concentration camp would write, ‘There would be no more “Lili Marlene” around an old piano now; no Padre McLuskey at the keyboard; no James McDiarmid (pictured) doing his “Puddle Dance”’ (a riotous variation of the Scottish sword dance, with booze, puddles and getting soaked to the skin thrown in). Or, as Mayne himself would write to his mother at the time, it was ‘all rather despondent. Saying goodbye is never a pleasant thing.’ My new book, SAS Daggers Drawn, tells of their battles for France and Germany, summer '44 - spring '45, and of their wider battle to survive as a unit.
