Think you can outrun a bison? you can't Think of a bison like a high-performance muscle car. To move a massive body at 35 mph in a split second, you need a massive amount of oxygen, fast. The bison’s wide, reinforced trachea allows for an incredible volume of air to reach the lungs with very little resistance. This "over-sized" airway is what allows bison to maintain high speeds for long distances and recover quickly after a sprint. While a predator might tire out, a bison’s "intake system" keeps their muscles oxygenated and ready for action.
