Abnormal Psychology and Political Personality By: Amleset Negash G.Hiwet In the early 1900s, a team of psychologists within the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society sought to develop a comprehensive framework for human cognitive and behavioral perceptions, encompassing both normal and abnormal psychology. A prominent figure among them, Sigmund Freud, developed a ground-breaking theory of psychological functioning and corresponding therapeutic methods. He termed this psychological theory psychoanalysis, which posits that the individual personality is shaped by layers of the mind, particularly the unconscious and its central, dynamic forces. Freud’s Model of the Psychoanalysis Freud articulated profound aspects of human psychology, discussing the unconscious in relation to forces that influence individual behavior and cognitive abilities. He proposed that the human psyche operates under the influence of three interacting forces: instinctual needs, rational thinking, and moral standards. He believed these forces operate primarily at an unconscious level, inaccessible to immediate awareness. All three forces are dynamic and interactive. In this perspective, Freud described these three forces as: Instinctual Needs (the id): this component represents the human drives and impulses and operates entirely on the pleasure principle. It seeks immediate gratification for its desires, regardless of reality or possibility. For example, a child driven by the id demands water instantly, without the capacity to understand its availability. The id unconsciously seeks gratification according to this pleasure principle. Rational thinking (the ego): unlike the id, the ego operates in accordance with the reality principle. While the ego also seeks gratification for the individual’s needs, it understands the constraints and possibilities of the external realities. It may defer a desire—such as repressing the urge to drink water when it’s inaccessible— until a realistic opportunity arises. The ego utilizes reason to guide when and where impulses can be safely or acceptably expressed, often developing defense mechanisms to manage unacceptable drives under present circumstances. Moral Standards (the Superego): developing from the ego, the superego operates by the moral principle, representing an internalized sense of right and wrong. When individuals internalize values from their environment, the superego causes feelings of guilt or shame when actions violate these moral standards, leading the individual to judge their own behavior against an ideal. Personality, Conflict, and Development Freud proposed that these three components are integral to personality, and a degree of conflict among them is inherent. A healthy and functional personality is characterized by a dynamic, effective working relationship and acceptable compromises among the id, ego, and superego. Conversely, excessive conflict among these three forces can lead to signs of dysfunctional behavior. During the developmental stages, individuals learn to successfully manage the conflicts between these three forces. Successful adjustment leads to personal growth and normal psychological functions, where a person effectively controls their impulses. When this adjustment process fails, personal growth may become stuck at an earlier developmental stage, leading to abnormal psychological functions. Uncontrolled impulses, manifesting in repeated impulsive and potentially dangerous behaviors—such as self-harm, extreme rage, or constant arguing—can become normalized as an abnormal personality emerges due to unmanageable conflict. Application to Horn of Africa Political Dynamics It is a proposition that the political, diplomatic, military, and economic conditions in the Horn of Africa may, in part, be analyzed through the lens of psychological functioning. Specifically, certain policy decisions may reflect patterns that parallel the Freudian psychoanalytic theory of personality conflict. The actions and statements by the Prosperity Party (PP) in Ethiopia, particularly the emphasis on the country’s population size (exceeding 120 million) as a singular or major justification for the acquisition or ownership of a port, offer a potential parallel to the id’s pleasure principle. Challenging the premise: the claim that population size is the primary determinant for port ownership is an assertion that does not correlate directly with international precedent or the principle of national sovereignty. International law, instead, focuses on a landlocked nation’s right of access to the sea through cooperative arrangements and mutual agreements, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the transit State and on the basis of bilateral accords. The Impulse vs. Reality: in this analysis, the pursuit of port ownership, motivated by a singular internal drive (“must have a port”) and disregarding established international norms and the sovereignty of neighboring states, could be likened to the id’s pleasure principle. This perspective suggests that the behavior risks operating on impulsive gratification (id) rather than a balance of rational calculation (ego) and adherence to international legal standards (superego). Pursuing an impulse over reality and moral principles could be argued to lead a political entity toward dangerous and potentially destabilizing directions. Furthermore, the coordinated misinformation and disinformation campaigns concerning the sovereignty of Eritrea could be viewed as an attempt to gratify this impulsive narrative. Eritrea, as a sovereign state, is committed to peace, stability, and strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with its neighbors (including Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and etc.). Policy statements that overtly challenge Eritrea’s sovereignty, disregarding the UN Charter and international law, could be viewed as an externalization of an internal, irrationalized conflict. The political trajectory of the Prosperity Party, in this context, might be seen as being at a challenging developmental stage requiring adjustment. If the adjustment process fails to incorporate the basic principles of rational thinking (ego) and international morality (superego), the political party may continue to enact impulsive actions in accordance with its immediate desire, rather than reality or moral principles. If, however, the adjustment process succeeds, the political entity could be expected to rationalize its impulses and undertake behaviors more conducive to stability and cooperation with neighboring countries.

ERITREA ― ❈ Sunday’s match in Mendefera town between an Eritrean team and Soloda Adwa FC from #Tigray drew a huge turnout and was declared a major success. The Tigrayan team traveled with more than 300 vehicles, turning it into the biggest #Ximdo gathering so far. #Ximdo is all about reconnecting communities along the Eritrea–Ethiopia border, especially in Tigray and Afar, two Ethiopian regions with deep ties with Eritrea. #Tsimdo #Ethiopia

(UPDATE) - 🔥 Police in Dire Dawa stormed the home of a young Somali man after he dared to speak publicly in Amharic, rejecting the fabricated claim made by PM Abiy Ahmed. But the arrest didn’t go as planned. Within minutes, angry residents flooded the streets, standing shoulder to shoulder to protect him. What began as a quiet raid exploded into a charged standoff, with the community refusing to back down. #Ethiopia

ETHIOPIA — Anger is rising among ethnic Somalis after PM Abiy Ahmed falsely claimed in a recent parliamentary speech that “ድሬድዋ የኦሮምያ ነበረች” (Dire Dawa was once part of Oromia). They are now demanding that he retract the statement and issue a formal apology as such claim has a potential to incite ethnic violence. Dire Dawa is a chartered city in eastern Ethiopia, near Oromia region, founded in 1902.

#Eri101: Eritrea - a country that has emerged trimphant from 8 decades of political and armed struggle to attain and safeguard its independence - has developed formidable resistance to all sorts of psychological warfare. No amount of negative propaganda can even make a dent.

I had a wonderful conversation with Ana Gubenco, the Marketing and Sales Representative of #TurkishAirlines! We explored the exciting flight options from Asmara to Istanbul and discussed ways to enhance the services connecting these two beautiful cities. Ana shared the fantastic news about Turkish Airlines' ambitious growth plans, including the acquisition of new Boeing and Airbus aircraft. They’re aiming to expand their fleet to over 800 planes by 2033! Plus, they are adding new destinations and enhancing their digital offerings. It’s impressive to see this growth supported by strategic partnerships, like their recent collaboration with the Bank of China. I genuinely look forward to seeing how this expansion unfolds and the positive impact it will have on travellers! #WTM2025, #TurkishAirlines

From Afwerki to Abiy Ahmed: You will not reach the Red Sea! In a televised interview, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki’s remarks about the alignment of his country’s vision with Egypt’s in protecting the Red Sea as an international waterway represent a strategic message directed at Addis Ababa. Ethiopia has been seeking a maritime outlet through Eritrea or Somalia — a move that threatens regional sovereignty and could heighten border tensions. Afwerki’s statements drew attention to a potential Egyptian–Eritrean–Somali alliance that could hinder Addis Ababa’s ambitions, especially amid ongoing disputes over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), further deepening Ethiopia’s regional isolation. Afwerki emphasized that responsibility for securing this vital maritime corridor lies solely with the littoral states — Egypt, Eritrea, Somalia, Yemen, Djibouti, and Sudan — and rejected any foreign interventions or military bases, calling them “a pretext for instability.” More importantly, on the Sudanese crisis, Afwerki stated that the conflict stems from foreign interference aimed at complicating the country’s strategic position. He called on regional states to support the Sudanese people in eliminating external meddling and rebuilding their nation, stressing that Sudan’s stability is key to the stability of the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Afwerki also renewed his criticism of the African Union, saying it has failed to fulfill its role over the past decades due to a mix of internal shortcomings and foreign interference.

Their cruel and crooked boss, the Beshasha Brute, #AbiyAhmed insults Ethiopians, mocking our pain and accusing us of having a “short memory.” But we have no short memory—nor have we forgotten the historical record of the former corporal and a POW under #DERG/WPE regime, #BerhanuJula rather "Jilo", catapulted to the rank of “general” under an ethnic qouta system by his former masters . Ethiopians remember everything—the lies, the betrayals, and the blood he spilled to build his delusions of grandeur.

What drives #Ethiopian elites to be so covetous, expansionist, and perpetually obsessed with questions of land ownership? They constantly ask: Who does Addis Ababa/Finfinne belong to?ኣዲስ ኣበባ/ፍንፍኔ የማን ናት? Who does Dire Dawa belong to? ዲረዳዋ የማንናት? Who does Welkait-Tegede belong to? Who does Raya and Alamata belong to? Who does Metekel, Welega .. belong to? Who controls the Somali–Oromo border areas like Moyale? And beyond Ethiopia’s borders/issues, the same pattern continues: Who does Al-Fashaga belong to? Who does #Ogaden belong to? #ONLF Who does #Tigray belong to? #TPLF Who does #Oromo belong to? #OLF Who does Badme belong to? we got the answer after wasting more than 100,000 lives and untold devastation. Now, they are even venturing to ask questions that history, international law, and political reality have long settled — questions that no sane interpretation of borders or sovereignty can justify. Who does #Assab belong to? ኣሰብ የማን ናት? This is structural problem. There is something fundamentally wrong when a nation continuously wastes its people, resources, and future disputing over lands, yet cannot find leadership capable of resolving these issues and moving forward in peace and harmony with itself and its neighbors..I blame the Ethnic federalism politics?
