I need to do more work on this, but this is the TA stipend or .50 FTE at T&PS PhD granting programs, with living wage for city in the second column & % of stipend in relation to living wage. Not all programs guarantee funding, nor are they able to get all students to .50 FTE

For #astr2022, I presented work on T&PS PhD stipends relative to a living wage in cities where the program is housed. So few of our programs offer stipends that are even half of a living wage. I support @uaw2865 and hope that all grad students continue to collectively organize.

When this book came out in April 2020, I was told that because of Covid, it would only have a small print run. Can you RT & help me make sure that was a wrong prediction and that sinking 7 years into the research was worth it? It sets the stage for what's been happening since!

For decades, the American audience has been conditioned to accept this acting convention. So, the issue is really not about the RACE of the nonwhite actor; it's about what kind of actor YOU are willing to accept as The Actor--one who could portray the universal experience.

The recent controversy over the casting in @HouseofDragon and @LOTRonPrime reminds me of that time when some folks were upset that Ariel in the musical version of Little Mermaid was Asian. I've been thinking about casting for a long time, so let me share my view. 🧵

@noemontez Once the diss has begun, a lot of the factors are already determined. Advising earlier, even before it's "my" grad student or "your" graduate student, makes more of a difference, I would say.

@noemontez If we are including non-academic positions when we discuss "the market" which we (imho) must, then I would say a whole lot. If we are talking about helping with cover letter, talking about TT job openings, etc., I'd say not much.

Question for the academic hive mind. Especially those of us who teach PhDs, but really anyone engaged in doctoral education. We know the market is a crapshoot. How much does advising play a role in success on the market and is it possible to quantify?
