@shayanrm The NIH budget was $47 billion last year; assuming a 20% drop, it would still be about $40 billion this year. With $4–$5 billion in savings from indirect costs & intramural administration costs, I don’t foresee a major reduction in grant funding-will just be increased competition

I am absolutely NOT considering leaving the United States as a scientist. I immigrated to the U.S. 30 years ago for scientific training, eventually became a U.S. citizen, and started my own lab. America provided me with incredible opportunities in science, and I intend to continue here no matter what.
However, the way we practice science must also fundamentally change soon. Scientists cannot ignore the AI revolution or continue with business as usual. Our primary goal should not merely be self-preservation or our status or status quo, but rather adapting proactively to this transformation. AI represents a tremendously positive and rapidly accelerating force for scientific progress. Our challenge as scientists is to harness AI effectively, making research more efficient and maximizing our contributions to improve the world.
Currently, America is still the ideal environment for the advances in science and technology-acting as the locomotive driving humanity forward at an extraordinary pace. It’s also uniquely suited for experimentation, a country willing to pursue radically contrarian ideas and change. As scientists, we should value this aspect greatly, even if it occasionally contradicts our immediate self-interests.
These opinions are entirely my own, and I recognize they are not shared by the overwhelming majority of my colleagues. But that’s ok, because This is the Way!
