I'm convinced this diagram illustrates a big part of the Patient Flow problem. We're not looking at the right data because there aren't enough meaningful conversations taking place about what data needs to be looked at. @sib313 @RCEMPolicyVP @ProfDerekBell
Neil Pettinger@kurtstat

Data conversations need to take place between managers and data analysts. But managers don't initiate them because they have an antipathy towards data. And data analysts don't initiate them because they have an antipathy towards conversations.

Specialty bed base 'heaviness' has a day-of-the-week trajectory in my dataset. This trajectory appears to be independent of the bed fullness and more to do with the length of stay of the patients generating the bed fullness. (Thanks to @iangarethreeves for the tip.)

I calculate 'heaviness' by multiplying the fullness of the beds each day by the average length of stay so far of the patients who are generating the fullness. Heaviness seems to 'explain' patient flow better than mere fullness.

Something @jim_crawfurd said yesterday in a different context (“Just fix exit block FFS”) made me wonder how often ED folk get to see - for example - data that shows how the fullness/heaviness of inpatient wards affects ED crowding and length of stay. 5/5

Professor @mumtaz_patel_1 said: ‘No one could fail to be touched by the distressing experiences of the candidates affected, and we sincerely apologise again to the 283 doctors. ‘We have a huge responsibility to ensure the quality and robustness of these high-stakes exams, which dominate early training and are the entry point to higher specialty training in a physician’s career. The report gives us an important opportunity to learn and improve the way we work together as the Federation.’ ow.ly/RHEI50XnGSV

To get a better idea of how much “displacement” was experienced by Respiratory Medicine’s patients, I counted how many of them were being accommodated on *non-*Respiratory wards at midday each day. That’s the green line whose scale is measured on the right-hand axis. 2/4
