Nice to hear from you, Andy. Thanks for the by election. We live for such things. I’m in no doubt life is tough for lots of folk in Makerfield. But it’s hardly a poster child for urban squalor/deprivation. Thatcher left power in 1990. She was followed by seven years of unThatcher Major and 13 years of Labour government, of which you were a part. So it’s quite a stretch to blame her for any continuing woes. Unless we blame Labour for failing to put anything right. On the other hand the houses you were walking past were bought by the tenants under Thatcher’s right to buy scheme, which has given them some pride in place and some wealth they once could only have dreamt of accumulating. I assume your pledge to ‘renationalise housing’ does not include taking these homes back into public ownership ... even if that would constitute a proper, radical reversal of the Thatcherism you’re (some what bizarrely) campaigning against.

@afneil You need to get out of London, Andrew. You’ve clearly got no idea how much people here are struggling. And, yes, a lot of it can be traced back to Margaret Thatcher.

Albert Finney was born today in 1936! Here is in Wolfen (1981), a fine horror movie that's a bit overlooked nowadays. A fascinating plot, an unsettling atmosphere and great use of SFX: think Predator meets The Howling on the streets of New York.

Really pleased to share that I’ll be delivering the opening keynote at the Music, Autobiography, and Constructing the Self conference at University College Dublin School of Music this July. My keynote, Writing the Self, Performing the Star: Popular Music Autobiography and the Construction of Musical Identity, explores how musicians construct identity through memoir, performance, mediation, and audience encounter. Drawing on themes from our edited collection Rereading Musicians and Their Audiences: Popular Music Autobiographies, the talk examines autobiography not simply as confession or memory, but as an ongoing performance of selfhood shaped through stardom, fandom, gender, labour, and cultural memory. The conference brings together an exciting international group of scholars working across musicology, autobiography studies, performance, and cultural history, and I’m very much looking forward to the conversations this event will open up around musical lives, identity, and narrative
