I generally respect Powell but his answer here cannot be reconciled with his legacy. His track record on financial regulation virtually guarantees that no Democratic president will ever again be able to re-nominate a Republican appointed Fed Chair. 1/3

A question about the role of the vice chair for supervision led Powell to lay out his philosophy on how a Fed chair should operate more broadly (offered by way of explaining why he didn't want to get too involved in regulatory fights, which have become more partisan): "I like to think that the chair should always be someone who is working without regard to political [considerations] and should be therefore a person who can be reappointed by either side. That's always been the case.... and I think it's a good test of the Fed's nonpartisanship that your appeal is really bipartisan."
