This year's theme is Skills, Systems and Sustainable Futures is timely and will foster transformative discussions on the skill and systems needed to enable the quality and scale of higher education wjich a growing youth population demands. It is well attended by more than 20 countries, university presidents, vice chancelors, regional associations and international partners. Yesterday, a bank in the same town was closed after staff were detained by militants. Similar stories throughout the region. The madness continues, and it must stop. The Eritrean model of forced conscription is being replicated across Tigray by a criminal and regressive group. These photos were taken this morning in Adigudom, where face-covered militants are seen rounding up young people. Mothers were reportedly crying as their children were taken away. This must stop. Many of our universities across Ethiopia are holding graduation ceremonies this week, celebrating the achievements of thousands of graduates who will help shape our nation's future. I was delighted to join the 7th graduation ceremony of Werabe University in the beautiful city of Werabe, Central Ethiopia. I highlighted the ongoing reforms in the education sector and had the privilege of presenting medals and a trophy to the top-performing graduates. Our future lies in the knowledge, talent, and determination of these graduates. Congratulations to the Class of 2026! 🎓🇪🇹

The criminal and regressive group in Tigray has recently issued a dangerous proclamation that Human Rights Watch has described as an abusive law. It mandates forced military conscription and criminalizes dissent, with penalties extending up to capital punishment—echoing practices long associated with its "tsimido" partner, Eritrea. This proclamation exposes the group's true nature. It comes after reports of youth being rounded up, indiscriminate shootings and killings, and the imprisonment of elderly women. Its apparent purpose is to terrorize the population and further undermine the Pretoria CoHA. This draconian proclamation may also become important documentary evidence in future efforts to hold this group accountable. Those involved in implementing these unlawful measures should be aware that they may be held individually accountable under the law.
