As John Hardy points out, anyone who sees elderly people with dementia in a clinical setting shouldn’t really comment on treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The cheek of these clinicians! Anyway, I particularly enjoyed “Howard though was quite unrepentant”.

And the #EUGEI study is a massive undertaking by academics across 17 European settings in 5 countries, and one site in Brazil (not included in the current study). Thanks to all collaborators & participants. 8/n

Work was led by my excellent @PsyLifeLab PhD student @HummaAndleeb based in @UCLPsychiatry & @UCLPALS, who is studying why migration increases psychosis risk for many groups. 7/n

But if this is a signal, it adds to the literature that suggests selected interventions in at-risk groups - here extending to teenage migrants - could be legitimate targets for the prevention of psychosis. 6/n

Our new paper on age at #migration and #psychosis risk is out today in @PLOSMentalHlth. We find that migrating during adolescence, defined in the study as 11-17 years old, is associated with almost twice the risk of psychosis cf. non-migrants. journals.plos.org/mentalhealth/a… 1/n

Limitations of the study include the small sample size when stratified by age at migration & ethnicity, the case-control study design (essentially, cross-sectional) & missing data (handled via multiple imputation) 5/n

We know adolescence is a key period for identify formation, brain maturation & the emergence of psychosis. Migration in this period may disrupt these processes for some, requiring teenage migrants to form new social groups, learn new a language & navigate new environments 4/n

We found adolescent migration had independent effects in North African and Black migrants, with a trend for White migrants in this direction, but sample sizes became small at this level of stratification, so caution is needed. 3/n

Data came from 5 countries in the #EUGEI study of first episode psychosis on 2132 participants. The increased risk with migration during adolescence was not explained by ethnic differences in the sample, measures of socioeconomic position or parental mental health 2/n
