I’m truly sad to see @RevDrDre step down as dean. He is a wonderful leader, inspiring, and a good friend. I understand, however, the desire to pursue scholarship and writing. May the Lord bless this new chapter of his call as a scholar for the church. He will be sorely missed 🙏🏽

After years of faithful leadership, Rev. Dr. Dennis R. Edwards will step down on June 30, moving into a new season of scholarship. We’re deeply grateful for his steady presence and lasting impact. Read more: bit.ly/4sknY9o Send a note of thanks: seminary@northpark.edu

Kim Bowes's Surviving Rome is a must-read for New Testament scholars interested in economic struggles of the 90% vs. educated elite of the Roman world. Here is a nice podcast with the author that summarizes her work (H/T Jordan Ryan) thepodcastbrowser.com/kim-bowes-on-s…

Last year we shared an unusual vocabulary list of some 1300 rarer Greek words from major authors. This tool was used 75 years ago at Winchester College, where Classics was then thriving. Now we've imposed some order on the chaos to help your studies along: antigonejournal.com/2025/03/ancien…

I'm very excited that this article is on its way into the world. It represents years of wrestling with the author of Hebrews' relationship to the law. (I'll post again when it's available. Today I'm editing proofs.)

If anyone knows how one might join an archaeological dig for the summer at Colossae, please fill me in. I would love to have the experience 🤩

Just got my endorsement copy of @jrrdodson’s fantastic book Paul the Rabbi Philosopher! 🙌🏽 Many congratulations Joey! Now if I can figure out how to transfer all my PDF notes to the print book, I’m golden 🤔

This summation of possibilities for the Sitz im Leben of Philemon is so worth retweeting. Though I admit I lean towards the amicus domini theory, this snippet by @smehorn lays out a nuanced defense of the fugitive slave hypothesis. Really, anything Seth writes is worth reading🤩

@ProfMaxLee Yes, I'm very much open to that perspective (3c below) and it certainly helps solve the problem of explaining their encounter. Here's my conclusion, which of course only summarizes prior points of discussion:

@smehorn I think Onesimus sought out Paul to arbitrate his (legal) case with Philemon. I’m not against God’s providential orchestration of miraculous encounters—I’m all for it—but here I think here it is a situation that Onesimus knew Paul was a person whom Philemon would listen

FYI, Moo ultimately opts for the "coincidental" explanation, but he expresses colorfully the incredulity of many scholars on this point.

Moo, Colossians and Philemon, 367: "So we are left with coincidence: Onesimus just happened to run into Paul . . . . Coincidences happen, of course, but this is a coincidence worthy of a Dickens novel and, many would argue, just as believable.

Just finished writing a review of this for @Themelios_TGC. I think it’s the most important update to the UBS in half a century. It’s a significant update. (I’ll post the review when it’s published.)

“Are you saying that now if I experience hardship, I should just get rid of my competitors?” For @ebertvoices, I interviewed Park Chan-wook & Lee Byung-hun abt NO OTHER CHOICE, artificial vs natural light, how to respond to failure, & the protagonist’s fatal foolishness 🔗⬇️
