🇿🇦 South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the country will not abandon its DEI policies, known as “Black Economic Empowerment (BEE).” “Those who say BEE and affirmative action must stop are just dreaming,” he said. South Africa has strict laws that mandate race-based hiring practices. A new law called the Employment Equity Amendment Act sets hiring targets for 2025–2030 across 18 economic sectors. Some workforce targets aim for 90–96% of employees to come from designated groups, which include Black people, women, and people with disabilities (minimum 3%). That means that if a company has more than 5% white men, it could face penalties of up to 10% of its income.

HALF: Government has halved fuel levies for three months to soften the blow of rising fuel prices, as global oil shocks force increases at the pump from April. Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy Modestus Amutse said the decision was taken by Cabinet in response to extreme volatility in international oil markets. “The cabinet has resolved to temporarily reduce the number of levies imposed on fuel by 50% for three months, with effect from 1 April to June 2026,” he said. Amutse said the intervention was necessitated by a sharp surge in global oil prices during March, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which have heightened uncertainty and pushed up crude oil and refined fuel costs. Despite the levy relief, fuel prices will still rise from April, with petrol seeing an increase of N$2.50 per litre, and for both diesel variants, N$4.00 per litre,” Amutse said.
