This is a catastrophic lack of understanding, with implications extending well beyond the pandemic. Groups of people and societies do not think or act. I Tweet about that regularly. They are *led* to feel or act in certain ways. /1 abc.net.au/news/2024-10-2…

@RageSheen I agree with much of your analysis here. I’ve been away from this literature for a while but I’m sure there were studies suggesting that for some groups at least, being seen as less warm was associated with more competence.

Sharing other writing on status, so it doesn’t seem just like my deranged thoughts. The house always wins on social media, being liked AND disliked builds status. Disliked even more than being liked. It’s why minimisers taunt us.

God it almost seems flippant and self serving to say that health communication and basic numeracy and quantitative literacy are crucial in a population, but Jesus, have a look at the evidence presented here so carefully!!

I’m late to this but I wanted to set out some thoughts on the awful @BMJPublicHealth excess deaths article. Commentary has focussed on media coverage, linking deaths to vaccines, but I want to discuss the article itself, which should not have been published in its current form.

"Our final recommendation is related to job precarity. At the root of many of the QRPs are the working conditions, as highlighted elsewhere by testimonies from researchers themselves and policy papers"

Questionable Research Practices as "Academic Survival Strategies" link.springer.com/article/10.100… I've always said this. P-hacking doesn't just happen; it is a selfish but rational response to incentives

💡My thought on last week’s Summit and why Australia needs to urgently prioritise funding Asian languages if we want to continue building ties with our ASEAN neighbours. @ANU_CHL @ANUIndonesia @ANU_Research @ACICIS @asiancurrents @NewColomboPlan @dfat @pmc_gov_au @AsiaEducation

#ANUExpert @elewilliams (@ANU_CHL) attended the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit last week. Amongst the flurry of announcements, she asks how invested we are in truly understanding our neighbours through Asia literacy? Read more 🔽 reporter.anu.edu.au/all-stories/ho…

@RageSheen @RealAnitaWhite I think your tweet #7 above is a key one here, because I largely agree with everything you posit. The importance of regulators in this is undeniable. Otherwise norms, emergent or otherwise, predominate.

And that was always the point. To reverse the post-Victorian changes, the invention of a ‘public’, as a response to the catastrophes of WW1 and WW2. The social hierarchies that preceded those wars never accepted that shift.

70 years of pretending we live in economies was really the old feudal hierarchies stripping away modern public institutions, which they despise. It’s a con. Those institutions were only allowed because 2 world wars sidelined the old hierarchies. Now they’re back.
