Just about every single criticism ever applied to Rings of Power works just as well for The Odyssey. The only difference is that Nolan is High Status, so people are more inclined to beclown themselves on his behalf.

IMHO, a lot of conservatives are missing the Biblical forest for the woke trees in Nolan's Odyssey. Yes, the casting of Elliot Page is silly and egregious. But here's the thing: Nolan's "The Odyssey" is an apologia for Christian morality poured into a Greek vase. The entire movie is rooted in what Nolan terms "Zeus' law." That law is: "Treat others as you would want to be treated, because anyone might be a god." Now, clearly, there's nothing like that in Greek mythology. It's not implicit in Homer. It's a direct rip from Biblical morality, substituting "because anyone might be a god" for "because man was made in the image of God." Nolan then takes this rule and uses it as his moral glue: the idea is that Odysseus, in utilizing the Trojan Horse, violated Zeus' law and led to full-scale slaughter. That sin has led to the unleashing of broader globalized sin (the "sea peoples" who don't respect Zeus' law and are invading surrounding areas). This is a highly Biblical message: that sin is infectious, and that sin also affects the world at large, not just the sinner. Odysseus has sinned, and he must atone for that sin through self-imposed exile. He must also sacrifice his own aspirations to restore the possibility of a moral universe: because he has unleashed catastrophic violence and violation of Zeus' law -- manifest in the suitors' cynical use of Zeus' law to eat Penelope out of house and home -- he must violate Zeus' law one last time and then accept the penalty, which is exile. This is a not only a movie that will make millions of people go read classical literature again. It also reinforces the idea that violation of the Golden Rule has disastrous consequences. I dunno. I'd consider that, on balance, a large-scale win for civilizational values, when weighed against the woke casting of Elliot Page or the dumbass discussion over whether Lupita Nyongo is good-looking enough (she is, and for the record Diane Kruger is German, not Greek).

As the "Nolan bros" fight the "ring-wing culture warriors", I stand with the facts and data of it all and here is the deal: The Odyssey beat the projections and had a solid global opening (enough to set the stage for a chance at crossing $1 billion and making profit...depending on how next week goes)...it is also true, however, that if we are talking about actual butts in seats (ticket sales)...this is actually one of the lowest viewed Nolan movies of the last 20 years or so...two things can be true at once. By the way, one of my favorite retelling of Troy is David Gemmel's trilogy. In that story, Helen was mid, but it is an actual plot device to propagandize her as beautiful. It was done intentionally and used to fit into the greater spheres of conflict in the story: how was Agmemnon going to sell a bunch of men to go to war for his selfish purposes? Create a noble cause of rescuing his brother's kidnapped beauty. Intentionality, connection, import, these are all lacking in Nolan's slop

A bit more box office perspective for The Odyssey: 1. Right now The Odyssey is tracking towards $257 million globally for its opening weekend as of the last update from Deadline 2. Looking at either inflation or more importantly ticket sales, this is NOT the biggest movie from Nolan (which doesn't mean the numbers are bad) 3. The majority of tickets sold for this movie are coming from IMAX and premium screens which means the average ticket price is likely $20-$25 (means not as many people are actually seeing it) 4. If the movie is able to get to over $250 million globally in its opening weekend, it would actually mean it has a chance to hit $1 billion since historically Nolan films can do more than 3x their global openings...more importantly the only film in the last 5 years to make this much or more and not hit $1 billion was Dr. Strange MOM in 2022 5. This movie still needs to do a lot of work to both make its money back (over $750 million to break even) and/or have any chance of hitting $1 billion...even with the Nolan audience the 2nd weekend number will tell the true tale of what is going on/what will likely happen 6. The Nolan Bros can keep running their mouths, but at the end of the day this movie is not likely to stand the test of time over the coming years More analysis tomorrow in my box office breakdown!

@realsashastone Hard to say the anti woke/woke crap doesn’t really matter to normal people. Most guys that I knew just said,” They made an ugly chick Helen? I’m out.” You are mostly seeing Nolan fanatics that like to feel deep by watching his movies at this point.

Just so you all know, The Odyssey made MORE money because of the culture war, as I told you it would. It was always a trap, from the beginning. Talking about it even slightly critically makes you a racist (as I was called all day long yesterday), and so that always emboldens the Left. Because of that, I expect to see studios trying to poke the bear in a similar way in the coming year.

@joelpollak @odysseymovie Nah, I don’t have to pretend to like Nolan movies to feel intellectual. Some are enjoyable, some are flat boring. This one is the latter. Could’ve been better with some actual attractive women in it.

This is what a theater looked like today before a screening of the @odysseymovie. By the start, it was standing room only. Hollywood isn’t dead; it just needs to tell the great stories again. (By the way, go see The Odyssey.)

The protagonist arc of Troy is more faithful to the illiad than the protagonist arc of Nolan's Odyssey is to Homer's. You not understanding that is part of the problem.

@matthewdmarsden I speak to many people every week and the movie lost a large portion of its potential audience. Nolan spending his fanatic audience capital on feminist deconstruction was for the cause and it will cost the movie, but it often is not obvious at the initial rug pull.

If Christopher Nolan had put together an all Greek cast for the Odyssey and even had them do the whole movie in Greek with subtitles, it would not have made one bit of difference to the box office of the movie. People are going to see a Nolan movie, not any of the stars.

Beggars belief that anyone would bet against a guy who sold almost $1 billion in tickets for a three hour biopic filmed in black and white about a guy few people had heard of.
