🎙️ NEW PODCAST 🎙️ Where should I start? I am launching a new academic podcast called “Scaling Theory”. I am of course incredibly excited, but more importantly, I hope you’ll find it interesting. I want to explore the power laws behind the growth of businesses, technologies, legal systems, and living systems. The podcast will feature scholarly discussions with select guests (I’ve already recorded a couple, to be published very soon!!) and deep dives into the academic literature. Everything is explained in the introductory episode. ➝ Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/7o5GqRfTO… ➝ Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sca… ➝ YouTube: youtube.com/channel/UCoxJ0…

Too much of the AI-in-education debate starts from what I think is the wrong question: “How do we constraint students so we can ensure they acquire the same skills we expected 5 years ago?” The better question, imho, is: Which of these skills still matter? Which skills matter less? Which new skills must students now develop?

@ProfSchrepel 100%. I am fighting like Rambo at my Faculty to induce AI based learning and critical thinking into the curriculum.

7/ So the framing for today. AI shifts what comparativists do with their time. Less retrieval, less curating reading lists for the next generation. More interpretation, more judgment about transplantation, more of the work the discipline has always claimed is its core.

6/ It also cannot do the Watson–Kahn-Freund work. Can a legal solution travel from one system to the other? That question requires judgment about legal culture, institutional fit. No graph answers that.

1/ Speaking today at the Netherlands Comparative Law Association symposium on AI and the methods of comparative legal research. @VUamsterdam @VU_law My pitch: AI changes what comparativists spend their time on. It does not change what comparative law is for.

Had fun teaching in Lisbon. Sharing here a few of the questions I asked my students. They had 10 minutes to prepare each one in small teams.

Had a fun and wide-ranging conversation with Thibault Schrepel - spanning from networks to how we can use game theory to test ai to how research is organized

If your friends are systematically more popular than you, that is not a bug. It is a feature of every social network ever measured. Matthew O. I just mapped the draft European Commission @EU_Competition Merger Guidelines against the Commission’s own case law using a new digital brain (papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…) I trained on all European Commission merger decisions. The number of inconsistencies between the draft Guidelines and the Commission’s own precedents is hard to believe. Of course, I would have preferred to share this directly with the European Commission. But DG COMP remains one of the few antitrust agencies that has consistently refused to join the Stanford #ComputationalAntitrust Project, which now includes over 80 antitrust agencies worldwide. law.stanford.edu/computationala… So I suppose I have no choice but to share some of the findings in a forthcoming paper...

When regulators write rules that ignore technical detail, who fills the gap? Marco Almada’s answer: courts, agencies, and a handful of private actors. That's the hidden delegation inside technology-neutral law. Talk + discussion coming up 👇 alti.amsterdam/event/marco-al… @alti_VU
