The CardBound documentary raised my interest in Playtest cards, and I actually found one available on Ebay. Here's the Pokemon Graded: Heal Powder Neo Destiny Playtest (2001) CGC 6. It is one of the rare internal prototype cards created by Wizards of the Coast (WotC) during the development of the English Neo Destiny expansion before its public release in 2002. Key feature about this card: 1. There is no illustration 2. Card name is there 3. Card text 4. Version number Price is listed at $9,199.99. CGC proved authentic (but you never know, right?): cgccards.com/certlookup/304… If I have the money I'd just buy it right away... too bad my pocket is too small. Here's the link to the card: ebay.com/itm/3185644076… #ad

@brandoncotyy I wonder how much these “fake” playtest cards worth now. Such a significant story in Pokemon

@ProfVictini Well done documentary. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was surprised at the fake printing and dots part.

Finally got the time to watch CardBound's "I Have The First Pokemon Card In The World". Nicely filmed documentary that has a cinematic twist with the Market Promo Ivy Pikachu, as well as a coverage about the fake prototype. Wonder if this is too niche for most people, after 4 days it only had 28k views. The part I enjoyed the most? The decoding of the printing dots by Scott Mastromatteo.

Was looking at some of Yuka Morii's Pokemon card, and found this really special one. It's the Meiji Chocolate Promo (068/PCG-P, 2005). It was only obtainable through Meiji Chocolate, and this special Pikachu card came in the 2005 June series, where it's also possible to pull Mew and Gardevoir. Found a sealed copy on Ebay for $708, and PSA10 version is currently listed on the market at 935000Yen ($5760USD). It was the time when Pokemon card was really for kids.

I've been puzzled by why the first two Pokemon cards were Pikachu and Jigglypuff. According to multiple sources there were surveys prior to release and kids back in the days would mail in and vote for their favourite Pokemon. Pikachu and Jigglypuff were among the top choices. The problem is I am not able to find any of the scanned copies of these survey, and instead, Clefairy (Pippi ピッピ) was used as the icon in earlier prints of Corocoro. See the few images from Corocoro magazine back in July 1996 and September 1996. So why wasn't it Pikachu and Clefairy? (Pikachu wasn't even the mascot yet if you look at the pictures, and Clefairy was everywhere) Anyone who has some early memories to tell please? Source: dogasu.bulbagarden.net/features/books…

@ProfVictini Ayyy we have similar taste! Yeah, I agree. That’s what made me appreciate Ooyama and Imakuni cards, they’re so out of pocket and different from other cards.

Here’s a limited edition Pokémon card with only 5,000 copies ever made. This is Abareru-kun SM-P 320, featuring Japanese comedian Abareru-kun, who appeared on Pokémon TV shows like Pokénchi for years. You couldn’t buy this card. To get one, you had to buy Tag Bolt (SM9) packs, collect entry coupons, mail them in, and get lucky in a lottery. Only 5,000 winners received one. Great story, fun artwork, and officially limited. Raw is about $200-$300. PSA10: $1,199.95 (May 31, 2026, Ebay)
