How good is PM Modi's Inflation Management? If we hear opposition, it would seem not at all. But the electorate, of course, keeps electing him. The opposition then says it's all marketing of PM Modi rather than reality :) ... It is noteworthy that for the last 10 years, hardly any election has seen Mehengai as an important campaign plank. That's a huge development for a chronic inflation-prone country that India has been historically. To find out the reality, I dug up inflation numbers going back to August 1947 from Databases and RBI Monthly Bulletins to compare inflation performance across various PMs of India. And surprise, surprise... PM Modi has the best record on inflation across all PMs in India! No wonder Mehangai is no longer a key theme with Voters in elections fought. I had expected that, compared to India's historical high inflation of 10%+, PM Modi's regime has had significantly muted Inflation, never touching double-digit, even during the challenging Pandemic period when world over countries saw record Inflation, some of them reporting higher inflation numbers than India! Reasons and how he did it? Many, amongst them - cleaning of Supply Chain inefficiencies (GST reforms, digital integration etc), leading to lowering cost, faster delivery of goods, and lower oil intensity of the economy, Focusing on Distribution as also Production, thereby maintaining balance and avoiding distribution based inflation such as suffered by UPA2; A strong fiscal discipline; and Distributive Justice that is more in kind than direct Cash (Anna Yojana, Awas Yojana, Toilet Scheme - all in kind).
