“I wouldn’t change a thing about my child’s autism.” Your autistic child can name all the dinosaurs. My profoundly autistic child cannot speak, will need 24/7 care for life and has a life expectancy of 39 years. We are not the same. #autism #profoundautism

Dear Aspies / Level 1 autistics: Yes, some people have it worse than you. Like the level 3s. I know some “neuroaffirming” therapists who might can help you out with your feelings about this, is you need one hmu (I also have shrooms for sale, hmu) Jk 🤣

@jessesingal I don’t know if this is a crazy idea, but, if he can point to letters on a piece of cardboard, why can’t he just type them on a normal keyboard? I don’t get it.

This is such an insanely depressing story and I'm glad Engber picked it up. I have no idea why anyone would default to the assumption that Woody Brown wrote this novel. The only rebuttal seems to be that it's rude to point this out. theatlantic.com/books/2026/04/…

@ange_eme @Ecclesiasticu12 @jessesingal Absolutely. That’s the new trend with profound autism and non speakers. It’s taboo to say they are intellectually disabled. They are all secret geniuses and you have to find them in there with FC. My son is profoundly autistic, but I don’t buy this crap.

@Ecclesiasticu12 @jessesingal Not malicious, no. But perhaps her ego and status consciousness make her incapable of accepting and loving her son unconditionally for who he is. I see this often with elite parents who can't accept their child is average, or lower cognitive ability.

Did you know? According to a 2009 study, mothers of autistic adolescents and adults have similar cortisol levels as combat soldiers. #autism

@jimtemu Because deep down inside they are fearful that the results of that test would be disastrous.

I keep hearing autism’s a “motor-planning disorder,” and that’s why facilitated communication works. Very weird. If that’s what autism is, then not telling the facilitator the answer shouldn’t matter at all. Why all the resistance to blinded testing from the motor planning crowd?

April is now #Autism Acceptance Month. Here’s what I DO accept: Autism is a disability Autism is not a gift Lumping everyone under one autism umbrella was a mistake Profound autism exists & needs a separate diagnosis Removing Asperger’s was a mistake

@draevans You must be referring to level 1s. For level 3s, or those with profound autism, it’s eloping.

You’ll be seeing a lot of feel good stories about autism today on #worldautismawarenessday. An autistic race car driver. Love on the Spectrum cast members praising autism. Don’t forget about those who need 24/7 care for life. Don’t erase us. #autism

Isn’t it amazing how the autism levels can be fluid for the high functioning crowd, but not for profound individuals? I’m still waiting for my son to have a level 1 day. 🙄 #autism #profoundautism

With #autismawarenessmonth comes “autism is a gift!” “Autism is not a disability, it’s a different ability!” “autism is a superpower” Does this look like a superpower to you? Profound autism exists, and families are hurting. #autism #profoundautism

Do level one autistics in their echo chamber really not realize some people will need someone to care for them for life because of their autism or do they just ignore the people who need that because they dont want to be associated with that

@draevans Let’s pretend you have stomach pain. You can tell a doctor that you have pain or you can say profound pain. When you say profound, the point gets across that it’s serious, intense, and severe. Same for autism.

For a moment pretend autism represents cupcakes. You have plain, lemon drizzle, blueberry, iced … cupcakes. Each one is a cup cake, but would you say some are more profoundly a cupcake? If a cupcake is a cupcake, why do autistic people need to be profoundly or severe?

@Kimispraying @usedgov SOME have apraxia, not ALL. Intellectual disability is a common co-morbid condition with profound autism.

@usedgov Children with nonspeaking profound autism also have Apraxia, it is a mind body disconnect. Making it difficult to get their body to cooperate with what they want. ABA Therapy keeps them locked into a toddler age academic schedule. They are intelligent!!!!
