What did Jesus mean when he said he came to “fulfill” the Law and the Prophets in Matthew 5:17? Today, I’m joined by author @TheoLogix to explore this question. His new book, I Came to Perform the Law: A Study on the Meaning of Pleroo (“Fulfill“) in Matthew 5:17, examines this topic in depth. In our conversation, Eitan walks through his unique approach to studying how Jesus uses pleroo throughout the Gospels and offers key insights for understanding its specific nuance in Matthew 5:17. I hope you enjoy the discussion! youtube.com/watch?v=FGnZvK…

Warning: Eitan ben Levi‘s book, while short, is not an easy read. Still, it is an important work dealing with the use of the Greek term pleroo (fulfill). I recommend everyone read it. Again, it is a short book.

I really appreciate Jonathan A. Brown's thoughtful review of Born Again to a Living Hope. "Wilber takes the chapters piece by piece and addresses nearly every theme along the way. His practical advice is sapiential for believers of all backgrounds, but in particular for those in the modern American social context. He carefully balances his scholarly insights with pastoral care." Read the full review here: torahapologetics.com/book--article-…

R. M. Bailey is a dear friend and a gifted Messianic Jewish scholar. I’m grateful for his kind words about my commentary on 1 Peter: "In Born Again to a Living Hope, Wilber has masterfully gifted the believing community with a study on 1 Peter that perfectly balances exegetical diligence with clarity for all audiences to benefit immensely from. This short yet deeply stimulating and insightful commentary provides the reader with all they could ask for and belongs on every believer's shelf, taking its worthy place among great studies on Petrine literature." —R. Ryan Lambert's (@rlambertatl) kind words about "Born Again to a Living Hope" mean a lot to me. I'm a big fan of the work he's doing through the Bridge Builders Forum: "Few commentaries succeed in combining rigorous research with cutting-edge scholarship while also encouraging the reader's faith. David Wilber's commentary on 1 Peter achieves this balance, prompting us to consider the text carefully in its original context and reflect on its meaning for our time." —Ryan C. @DavidWilberBlog Shalom David, just wanted to drop you a quick response. I took a couple of days off from my grind (Masters in OT Exegesis) to dive into your book, Born Again to a Living Hope: A Messianic Commentary on 1 Peter, which I found it to be a real breath of fresh air! Your verse-by-verse approach is excellent: clear, insightful, and does a great job balancing the deep scholarship with straightforward, easy reading. I truly enjoyed the framing of it as a Diaspora letter to the remnant, mostly Gentiles grafted into Israel's calling, with the practical application for all of us today choosing to seek out holy living amid exile and persecution. I appreciated the different explanations of 3:19. They were laid out well, and I found myself reexamining my own view, especially with highlights on the Greek for spirit (πνεῦμα) and prison (φυλακή), along with 1 Enoch's close ties to this Gen 6-related interpretation. The Messianic connections, such as a royal priesthood derived from Exod. 19 and Deut. 7, tying to the eschatological remnant, not replace, but expanded, very powerful! The discussion of household codes and defending our faith equips us to live this out today. As Dr. German says, vital for Torah-observant believers. If future series additions keep up this level of intellectual engagement, count me in for every volume. Now back to the slow seminary grind, lol, but with a renewed living hope. Thanks for this, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh, faithful dive into Peter's epistle! Shalom! 5/5 Stars!!!

We are called to respond to reviling with blessing (1 Pet. 3:9). Despite our disagreements, we should seek to honor, bless, and pray for those who insult or oppose us. Holiness often invites hostility, but our love, good deeds, and prayers may cause others to reflect on their own lives and even draw them toward Yeshua (1 Pet. 2:12), or at the very least, open the door to peace (1 Pet. 3:13).

Deeply grateful for these encouraging words from dear friend Dr. Matthew Nappier regarding my commentary on 1 Peter: "David Wilber's commentary on 1 Peter is a rare and valuable achievement. As a scholar who teaches and preaches both the Old and New Testaments, I can attest that 1 Peter is a crucial, and often misunderstood, bridge between them. To read Peter well, one must read the Tanakh well. Wilber navigates this territory with impressive skill and theological clarity. He masterfully avoids the common pitfall of supersessionism, demonstrating that Peter's message is not one of Israel's replacement but of the nations' inclusion into Israel's story and covenants. Wilber's Pronomian (Torah-positive) framework is a particular strength. His exegesis of the 'holiness' command (1 Pet. 1:16) is rightly grounded in its original Levitical context, and his handling of the 'royal priesthood' (1 Pet. 2:9) correctly connects it to God's promises of restoration. This is a commentary that takes the Hebrew Scriptures as seriously as Peter did. Combining solid academic arguments, like his robust defense of Petrine authorship, with warm, practical application, Wilber has created a resource that is at once deep and accessible. Born Again to a Living Hope is a vital contribution for pastors, students, and laypeople, and it will be a welcome guide for any believer seeking to understand this foundational epistle." —Matthew C. Nappier, Ph.D.

Pronomian Publishing (@PronomianLLC) has launched an exciting new endeavor: The Messianic Jewish Application Commentary Series (MJAC) (edited by Dr. Igal German). The first volume in the series is "Born Again to a Living Hope: A Messianic Commentary on 1 Peter," written by David Wilber (@DavidWilberBlog). This new series is poised to be a valuable addition to the Biblical commentary and Messianic resource spaces. Get your hands on a copy now, available in digital, paperback, and hardcover here: a.co/d/2dcTbwI From the online description: "How do we remain faithful to God in an ungodly world that opposes our beliefs and values? The apostle Peter addresses this question in his first epistle. Writing to persecuted believers scattered throughout Asia Minor, Peter urges them to remain steadfast in their faith, even though they are facing hardship and social rejection. Why? Because their everlasting inheritance is far more precious than any cultural acceptance or comfort the world can offer. Peter reminds them that the living hope secured through the Messiah's resurrection gives them reason to rejoice, even while they are suffering. In this commentary on 1 Peter, David Wilber explores how the apostle's message continues to speak powerfully to believers today as we seek to navigate the tension between faithfully serving God and being good citizens of a society that rejects his ways. Combining careful scholarship with modern application, this work invites believers to stand firm in hope and holiness."
