The Indiana Senate concurred with House changes to SB 285 28-22. with less support and picking up more bipartisan opposition than before. However, the bill will go on to @GovBraun’s desk for a signature.

Describing it as “compassionate,” enough House members voted “yes” to adding a misdemeanor, fines, & possible jail time to the obstacles facing a homeless person to return it to the senate for a final vote. It barely passed - because of you. It’s not over. Take action below.

And while it nods to the idea that people may be referred to services in lieu of receiving the new misdemeanor this law creates, the text of the bill says the misdemeanor "shall" be enforced, whether services are available or not.

Senate Bill 285, which would force local law enforcement to fine, ticket, and jail Hoosiers for having no other place to sleep, is up for a final vote in the Senate TODAY. We ask you to contact your Senators and urge them to vote NO on this harmful legislation.

This legislation is not what Hoosiers want. This is a Washington, D.C. and special interest bill, not the Indiana-grown solution to homelessness that Hoosiers need. We need to make sure lawmakers know we see this for what it is.
