“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
Foundational Biblical Principle
Proverbs 1:7 (echoed in Proverbs 9:10 and Psalm 111:10) establishes a core truth in Scripture: true knowledge — especially the kind that leads to life, godliness, and understanding God’s ways — doesn’t start with human intellect, study, or experience alone. It begins with the fear of the Lord (a reverential awe, deep respect, and humble submission to God that motivates obedience and hatred of sin). Without this posture of humility and reverence toward God, any “knowledge” is incomplete or even foolish.
This sets the stage for all genuine spiritual insight.
