🚨 I've been hearing from university professors that ChatGPT is completely destroying learning and that we'll soon have an AI-powered semi-illiterate workforce. Here's a glimpse into the educational apocalypse: "Sarah, a freshman at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, said she first used ChatGPT to cheat during the spring semester of her final year of high school. (...) After getting acquainted with the chatbot, Sarah used it for all her classes: Indigenous studies, law, English, and a “hippie farming class” called Green Industries. “My grades were amazing,” she said. “It changed my life.” Sarah continued to use AI when she started college this past fall. Why wouldn’t she? Rarely did she sit in class and not see other students’ laptops open to ChatGPT. Toward the end of the semester, she began to think she might be dependent on the website. She already considered herself addicted to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Reddit, where she writes under the username maybeimnotsmart. “I spend so much time on TikTok,” she said. “Hours and hours, until my eyes start hurting, which makes it hard to plan and do my schoolwork. With ChatGPT, I can write an essay in two hours that normally takes 12.” - "By November, Williams estimated that at least half of his students were using AI to write their papers. Attempts at accountability were pointless. Williams had no faith in AI detectors, and the professor teaching the class instructed him not to fail individual papers, even the clearly AI-smoothed ones. “Every time I brought it up with the professor, I got the sense he was underestimating the power of ChatGPT, and the departmental stance was, ‘Well, it’s a slippery slope, and we can’t really prove they’re using AI,’” Williams said. “I was told to grade based on what the essay would’ve gotten if it were a ‘true attempt at a paper.’ So I was grading people on their ability to use ChatGPT.” - It would be great to hear more from teachers and educators to understand what might be potential solutions. I'm also adding below the essay I published today about the hidden dangers of AI chatbots.

🚨 BREAKING: French publishers and authors are suing Meta for AI copyright infringement, calling its actions PARASITIC. In the FIRST lawsuit of its kind in France, they urge other authors to take action. Read their official release: "The Société des Gens de Lettres (SGDL), the National Union of Authors and Composers (SNAC), and the National Publishing Union (SNE) are taking legal action against Meta before the 3rd Chamber of the Paris Judicial Court for the widespread use of copyrighted works, without authorization from their authors and publishers, to train its generative artificial intelligence model. This legal action is part of a regulatory context at the European level, with the AI Act reiterating the need for companies publishing generative artificial intelligence solutions to respect copyright and ensure transparency regarding the sources used to develop foundation models. During the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence, 38 international organizations representing all creative and cultural sectors also published a culture and innovation charter to defend copyright and intellectual property in the face of AI. 'The action we are taking must foster a serious desire among AIs to take creative work into account, respect its legal framework, and, where appropriate, find compensation for the use of the works they draw on. This is essential to preserve a fragile ecosystem that owes its richness to publishing diversity,' declared Christophe Hardy, President of the SGDL. François Peyrony, President of the SNAC, stated: 'The objective, through this unprecedented action in France, is also to pave the way for other similar actions to protect authors, if necessary, from the dangers of AI, which plunders their works and cultural heritage for training and produces 'fake books' that compete with genuine authors' books.' » 'While we have noted the presence of numerous works published by members of the National Publishing Union in the data corpora used by Meta, we are now taking the matter to court to have this breach of copyright law and parasitism recognized. Through this lawsuit, we hope to act on the basis of fundamental principles. The creation of an AI market cannot be conceived to the detriment of the cultural sector,' adds Vincent Montagne, President of the SNE. The plaintiffs are demanding respect for copyright law and, in particular, the complete removal of the data repositories created without authorization and used to train AIs." *To my knowledge, this is the first major AI copyright lawsuit in France. There are dozens of other AI copyright lawsuits piling up, the majority in the U.S. 👉 The best way to learn more about AI & copyright and stay updated on AI copyright lawsuits is by subscribing to my AI governance newsletter. Pls read this! OpenAI is now touting its "$500 billion" data center project with Softbank, and celebrated by Trump—it shows that OpenAI still doesn't have a viable business model, that their costs are too high, and that they need more state buy-in and outside capital to survive

@datasociety @bcmerchant @cariatidaa @bigblackjacobin Read @bcmerchant’s article evaluating OpenAI's business model, which argues that OpenAI is leaning on a flimsy presentation of AGI as its eventual business model––despite the lack of evidence it is a real possibility, or a viable profit pathway: ainowinstitute.org/general/ai-gen…

Editor's note: This story contains content that readers may find disturbing, including graphic allegations of sexual assault. Last summer, a British podcast broke the news that multiple women had accused Neil Gaiman, the acclaimed British fantasist and author of ‘The Sandman’’ and ‘Coraline,’ of sexual assault. Most of them were in their 20s when they met Gaiman. With one exception, the stories take place when Gaiman was in his 40s or older. By then, he had a reputation as one of the greatest modern comic-book writers and an outspoken champion of women. For our new cover story, New York features writer @lilapearl talks to more women who shared allegations of assault, coercion, and abuse. She also looks into Gaiman's upbringing in Scientology, as well as his relationship with his wife, Amanda Palmer, and what she knew. Through their stories, she uncovers the dark secrets Gaiman hid for decades. vulture.com/article/neil-g…

Please I am begging you. Write grammatically fucked up fics. Make disproportioned drawings. Produce things that will haunt you to your grave for how ugly you think they are. It’s still better than any AI content, because it’s yours. It’s still art, because it’s /you/.

Yesterday, over 600 people from different African countries were pushed from Libya to the deserts of Dirkou in Agadez, Niger. Libya continue to carry out mass expulsions thus violating both moral and legal responsibilities.

Le SMIC horaire net est de 9,4€. Si tu obliges une personne à taffer 15/semaine, elle perçoit au minimum 564€, soit la quasi totalité du RSA. Soyez donc honnêtes par les termes, le RSA est simplement supprimé.

All this talk about color grading and SUPERMAN led me to revisit SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006). It’s a great example of how production design and wardrobe dictate a film’s color - beyond just the grade. The entire look of the film is based on Superman's suit (yellow, blue, and red) They went for a more pastel and desaturated version of it - but every set design choice, and outfit is based on the same 3 or 4 colors. I should also note this was one of the first film's shot almost entirely digital with the Panavision Genesis. A camera that has far less data to work with than what we have today. Get your colors in frame because a good grade still can't save bad production design.
