Former US Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. Nearly 20 years in the Navy, with 15 years as a SEAL, and 8 combat deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. The case that split the SEAL community: In 2018, several members of SEAL Team 7’s Alpha Platoon (the unit Gallagher led) reported him to the NCIS. Chief Gallagher was charged with war crimes in Iraq during their 2017 Mosul deployment, including allegedly stabbing a wounded ISIS teen detainee and shooting civilians. He served roughly 7 months in pre-trial confinement in a military brig. After a high profile court martial, he was acquitted of murder and most serious charges, and convicted only of posing with the corpse for a photo. In 2019, with help from President Donald Trump, his rank and Trident was restored. This led to controversy, including the firing of Navy Secretary Richard Spencer. The case shook the SEAL community, with many believing justice was not done, while others believed the case was politically motivated, and celebrated the acquittal.
