The people of Kerala will remember this with gratitude, Chief Minister. On ecological grounds, the government should also scrap plans for an airport and a rail line serving Sabarimala. Malayala bhoomi is not for monetisation. thehindu.com/news/national/…

"The Thali Index" by Aman Raj @aman_raj05 and myself, 'EPW May 16, estimates the proportion of Indians whose food-consumption expenditure would afford them 2 thali meals per day, taken as a measure of the standard of living. epw.in/journal/specia…

@Pramodph2019 @Saiarav @Ideas4India The trend in the thali index of food consumption is not in the article. But we know that it is downward, for we have computed the index for 2011-12 separately. As I said in my last reply to you, we were interested in a measure of the level of consumption in 2023-24 @aman_raj05.

Thanks for your response sir. Sorry, I didn't get what you meant when you say downward trend since there is no reference to 2011-12 equivalent estimates in your calculation. Nevertheless, my point was assuming these as the actual poverty lines, there would be a significant decline from 2011-12 to 2023-24 by 20-25 percentage points.

@Saiarav You're right, it is "between 30 and 40 percent of the population" who could not afford 2 vegetarian thalis, not "40 percent" as stated. However, why should 2 meals of rice/roti, paruppu and subzi daily not be considered the consumption standard for India? @aman_raj05 @aman

@Saiarav @PulapreB @Ideas4India My thoughts on this. One can have other disagreements about the methodology whether an all India price can be used for both rural and urban etc. (typically urban to rural price difference is 15-20% for food). But I was more concerned with the trend. x.com/Pramodph2019/s…

A valid argument where Thali index of Crisil is used. As per this, the assumption is one person should be able to consume 2 thalis a day and anyone whose food expenditure is lesser than this benchmark may be considered poor. The authora used reference of Veg and Non Veg thalis.
