After talking a new friend on X, I got a little inspired. Thanks @alejandroreyes😉. I was able to find a dataset called Circana BookScan. It's collected by a market research firm that tracks point of sale data straight from booksellers, so it counts actual units sold, not surveys or self reported behavior. 19 million Bibles sold in the US last year. A 21 year high. If you don't follow this space, the story for decades has been that America is secularizing in a straight line. Every survey showed religious affiliation falling and everyone extrapolated it to zero. Then the sales data stopped cooperating. Bible sales have doubled since 2019. Publishers say first time buyers are driving it, mostly young people. The Bible app hit 150 million installs last year, up 50 percent in two years. And only 13 percent of Gen Z identify as atheist, versus 25 percent of Gen X. I think a lot of people are getting it wrong. A survey just asks what you call yourself. Buying a Bible or opening an app every day costs you money and time. To me actions are a better predictor than a label on a form. The 2026 unit count is important to me. Three record years is a trend. Make it Four? ... lets call it a regime change. So is this a real revival, or just anxiety buying in a chaotic decade? Curious what you think.
