IV. The life you want exists at a higher level of mind The mind develops through predictable stages (drawn from ego development models like Susanne Cook-Greuter’s, Spiral Dynamics, and others). Most people reading this sit somewhere between “Self-Aware” and “Strategist”: • Conformist: You are your group and its rules. • Self-Aware: You notice a gap between your inner world and external expectations. • Conscientious: You build your own principles and hold yourself accountable. • Individualist/Strategist: You see your beliefs as context-shaped and start questioning your own blind spots. • Higher stages: You treat identities and frameworks as useful fictions and eventually experience less separation between self, work, and life. Growth follows a pattern: dissatisfaction → uncertainty → discovery. You don’t need to know your exact stage. You just need to move forward. V. Intelligence is the ability to get what you want out of life Success requires three ingredients: agency, opportunity, and intelligence. In this context, intelligence is “cybernetic”—the art of steering. It means: • Set a goal • Act toward it • Sense where you are • Compare feedback to the goal • Adjust and repeat High intelligence = iterating, persisting, and seeing the big picture. Low intelligence = hitting a wall once and quitting. Any problem can be solved on a long enough timescale. The mark of intelligence is recognizing there’s always a series of choices that lead to the outcome you want. To raise your intelligence: reject default paths, embrace the unknown, set higher goals, study nature’s principles, and become a deep generalist. VI. How to launch a new life in one day The best transformations happen after you get truly fed up. This 1-day protocol creates that dissonance on purpose. Morning: Psychological Excavation (Vision & Anti-Vision) Set aside 15–30 minutes and answer honestly: • What dull dissatisfaction have you learned to tolerate? • What do you complain about but never fix? What would an observer say you actually want based on your behavior? • What truth about your life would be unbearable to admit to someone you respect? Then build your Anti-Vision: If nothing changes in 5 years… 10 years… or at the end of your life, what does that look like? Who are you becoming? How does it feel? This creates disgust with the status quo. Now flip it into a Vision: If you could snap your fingers and live your ideal life in 3 years, what does an average Tuesday look like? What identity would make that feel natural? What’s one thing the “new you” would do this week? Throughout the Day: Interrupt Autopilot Set phone reminders with questions like: • What am I avoiding right now? • If someone filmed me, what would they say I want? • Am I moving toward the life I hate or the one I want? • When did I feel most alive today? Most dead? Evening: Synthesize & Act • What’s the real internal enemy keeping you stuck? • Write one sentence for your Anti-Vision (what you refuse to become). • Write one sentence for your Vision (what you’re building toward). • Set layered goals:
– 1-year marker (proof you’ve broken the old pattern)
– 1-month project
– 2–3 daily actions to time-block tomorrow VII. Turn your life into a video game Organize everything into one clear system: • Anti-Vision → What’s at stake if you lose • Vision → How you win • 1-Year Goal → Your main mission • 1-Month Project → The current boss fight (skills, learning, building) • Daily Levers → The repeatable quests • Constraints → The rules that force creativity This creates a self-contained “game” with clear feedback loops, progression, and protection from distractions. Games are designed for obsession and flow. Why not engineer your life the same way? When your attention is invested in realistic goals and your skills match the challenge, life becomes deeply satisfying.

It’s about becoming the kind of person for whom the right actions feel natural. I’ve quit far more goals than I’ve ever achieved. Most people have. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. It means we need to approach change with more intelligence. Here are 7 powerful ideas on behavior change, psychology, and productivity that actually work. At the end, I’ll give you a practical 1-day reset protocol you can use to dig into your psyche and launch into a better direction. I. You’re not where you want to be because you’re not yet the person who belongs there Most people focus only on changing their actions (the least important part). The real lever is changing who you are so the right behaviors flow naturally. A bodybuilder doesn’t “grind” to eat healthy—he’d have to force himself to eat junk. A driven CEO doesn’t need discipline to work; they’d feel miserable lying in bed past their alarm. To them, their lifestyle isn’t extreme. It’s just who they are. Key truth: You must adopt the lifestyle that produces your desired outcome long before you reach it. If you say you want to lose weight but can’t wait to “enjoy life again” once you’re done, you’ll snap right back. Lasting change requires a deeper reason—one stronger than the pull of your old habits. When you truly shift your identity, unhealthy habits don’t just feel undisciplined—they feel disgusting because you see exactly where they lead. II. You’re not where you want to be because, on some level, you don’t actually want to be there All behavior is goal-oriented (teleological). Even the harmful stuff. You procrastinate not because you “lack discipline,” but because you’re unconsciously protecting yourself from judgment, failure, or rejection. You stay in a dead-end job not because you lack courage, but because safety and predictability feel like success compared to the risk of looking foolish. Real change requires changing your goals—not just the surface ones, but the unconscious ones shaping your perception of reality. A goal is a lens. It determines what you notice, what feels important, and what you act on. III. You’re not where you want to be because you’re afraid to be there Your identity forms through a simple cycle: 1. You adopt a goal 2. You perceive reality through that goal 3. You notice only supporting information 4. You act and get feedback 5. The behavior becomes automatic 6. It becomes “who you are” 7. You defend that identity to stay consistent This process starts in childhood through reward, punishment, and cultural conditioning. Later, it shifts from physical survival to protecting your ideas and self-image. Threaten someone’s political beliefs, religion, or self-view (“I’m not a risk-taker”), and they react with the same fight-or-flight response as a physical threat. That’s why change feels scary—it threatens the psychological safety of your current identity.
