Is it a sign of strength or weakness that a weight class got completely overrun by 4 freshmen?
Normally, I’d say it’s weakness. For example, there’s no way I can imagine 4 freshmen coming in and all 4 being better than Mitch/Mikey, or Brock/Jesse.
1 freshman? Sure. 2? Maybe. But 4?
I’m kind of torn. 133 is the most exciting weight, but I’m not convinced it was the best when 4 freshmen can just come in and take over.
With that said, those 4 guys are crazy talented no matter how you spin it.

I’m only tracking data back to 2014 for now, but this is incredibly rare. In fact, only 4 out of 4,290 wrestlers have lost in the first round and then come back for third. 2015 #9 AJ Schopp 2016 #8 Zach Epperly 2018 #10 Emory Parker 2024 #7 Tyler Kasak I say we call it the Lazarus Award, because these guys died in the first round, and came back to life on the backside. There can’t be a consolation prize. You gotta lose in the first round and claw your way back to third. I’m adding a tracker for it on the website for next year, and I’ll be making a trophy for any winners.

There are legit injuries. But I've been around a long time. I've seen guys with constantly dislocating shoulders finish 3rd. And guys with dislocated fingers trying to pop them back in during the match so they don't have to take injury time. Toughest shit I've ever seen. I will give Ryder that he has a long career ahead so maybe didn't want to make it worse. But most of these guys should be lacing up. That's my stance and it's kind of something every one of us has done for decades. These kids aren't more special or any more injured than those that came before them.

@adamtirapelle In Ryder’s defense, he wrestled to AA with a dislocated shoulder & has been hurt since the Big 12s.

@MatSavant There needs to be an NCAA award for that. Lowest Seed to AA.
Also, we need an Ironman award, highest seed to lose 1st round and come back to take 3rd.
