Her gains from Chinese AI infra stock are now close to covering the restaurant loss. “Sometimes I wonder why I’m still selling braised pork rice and beef noodle,” she said.

Then the conversation moved from AI apps to AI infrastructure. She told me she had closed another restaurant last year after only three months. Around the same time, she invested in Chinese memory-chip stocks after a friend in gaming noticed chip prices rising fast.

One of the most interesting conversations I’ve had recently about AI apps and #AI infrastructure was not at a tech event. It was at a beef noodle restaurant near my office.

I only learned about the late I.M. Pei in 2019, upon his passing. Reading his obituary, I was drawn by the beauty he created and the mark he left. I was also thrilled to see an Asian succeeding in a creative role and with this much impact.
